Buscopan

Buscopan has been mentioned a few times on here. I did not reply as my experience has not been good.

Anything more than one tablet now and again, causes strange constipation, cramping in the upper part of my stomach and bowels (instead of pain and cramping in the lower bowel).

It takes a few days to get over it. Every time I take it, I decide I will never take it again!

Anybody else suffer from this?

Thanks.

No , but it gives me a headache. There are other antispasmodics you can try Alverin citrate, for example.

I've tried Buscopan on more than one occasion and even several years apart and I've always had the same reaction, which is heart palpitations. I'm not sure if this is a common side effect - not many people have mentioned it and some seem to get on really well with it. When I needed to take antispasmodics, I would take Colofac (Mebeverine) instead.

Hi Jackie, I can’t take it at all. It makes me very constipated. I mentioned this to my gastroenterologist and he said it slows down the gut making it unsuitable for anyone with slow transit , that’s me.

Buscapan never did anything for me. My doctor prescribed Alverine Citrate which kind of work but I'm still woken up 04.00 with stomach cramps most days.

That also slows down the gut.

I had something similar when I took it - did nothing for the cramps that I actually had and it caused diarrhea when I took the dose my GP recommended. I stopped using it and went back to my hot water bottle!

Good morning Jackie,I've suffered from IBS for years and years recently diagnosed with Coeliac surprise surprise. All and there were many just ignored my requests .........are you sure it's IBS. Prescribed usual stuff buscopan mebeverine amitriptyline, sertraline, gabapentin . Sensible locum diagnosed coeliac which certainly makes IBS worse at times. In desperation I'd take buscopan plus paracetamol mostly at night when I had unbearable pain. It really works I'd eventually drift off to sleep. The price paid was indeed days and days of constipation......and pardon me for writing this rabbits poos ! I'm now trying plant based diet.

Warmest greetings and just keep experimenting. I am still on the journey from laxido to high fibre to low fibre to more liquid foods etc.

My very warmest greetings and just try to exercise as much as you can
