I have loperamide on prescription. It is the same stuff as in Imodium '. I know it's the same as an aspirin and Boots own painkiller scenario but I do find some makes are better than others. Maybe you need to find what the cause of the attack was first Good luck.

You could try imodium comfort plus, it's not got the plastic coating and has something extra in it that helps with cramps, wind and bloating which might be what is causing your pain. Loperamide is exactly the same as imodium so you'll probably find no difference if you take them. Apparently it's the coating that can cause pain and cramping /wind in some people. I have a large part of my bowel missing so I take 32 of imodium comfort plus every day and they really do work. I hope you find that helpful :)

I love this stuff but expensive for daily usage

Hi Picasso,

I have used High Fibre Lepicol and it is gentle. Have a look at the reviews to see if it is something you might like to take.

If you look at the ingredients of Imodium, you will find some really cheaper ones that have exactly the same ingredients as Imodium. Sainsbury's is one brand I would recommend but I have bought others. Just make sure they all have the same ingredients as Imodium. I too have had IBS for the past 8 years. Do you notice if you have headaches after taking Imodium? I do and my doctor told me it's one of the "side-effects".

Yes,I get that as well.

I agree, they are all exactly the same as loperamide except the imodium comfort. I take 1000 a month long term and you can get them in prescription (NHS) if you are taking them a lot as I agree they are expensive!

Is it okay to use it long term eg every day?

Hello, please read a post I wrote a while ago:-

healthunlocked.com/theibsne...

It may not help but some types of Imodium do have artificial sweetener in them. I believe these products clear up your symptoms for a short time and then send your stomach into meltdown again

Kind regards

V

Thanks for the reply.I will now watch out for that from now on.I had never thought of that.

Try half a tablet. Works for me unless it's a really bad attack.

My Imodium are capsules so I can't half them but I'm going to get Imodium Comfort which I think are pills so I will certainly try that. Thanks for the advice.

if you are willing to try the imodium plus comfort , i recommand doing so when you are staying at home and don't have any plans to get out ..because the added ingredient which is Simeticone works by collecting all small bubbles of air and turns them into a large one bubble to make it easier to expell out of the body and feel more relieved and less gas pain ..sounds good as a theory but for some people it can trigger a multi hours stay in the bathroom because the ( expelling ) process has been activated strongly and in some cases it can trigger another D attack because some sensitive digestive body systems can't tolerate this added ingredient ..so just be aware at least for your first trial make sure you're staying at home .

There is another drug widely used in the U.S called Lomotil .I haven't tried it yet but willing to suggest it to my GI Specialist in my next visit .

Good luck :)

Thanks for the reply.I intend to get Imodium comfort tomorrow but it frightens me what you have written because I am in that vicious circle at the moment "Stress =IBS=Stress and I am trying to get out of it and if it's going to give me diarrhoea again, that makes me wonder should I take it while I'm having this flare up which is stressing me out. Thanks for warning me about it.

Eternity78 profile image
Eternity78 in reply toPicasso10

if you type the drug name simeticone with reviews in your search bar ..you will find out more negative feedback than the positive ones. Many stated that this medicine launched a series of 💨💨💨 ( sorry for transparency , but you know what i mean 😷) that locked them in the toilet for a long time ..others ended up with another D attack or worsening of ibs symptoms in general.

I think this drug is more suitable for healthy people who have encountered diahrrea and gas cramps only in specific occasions , not for us long time IBS sufferers with sensitive guts cells !!

For the pain I recommand hot water bottles or pads that are sold in pharmacies at least they are safe and relieve some of the pain.

Hope you feel better and take care 🍀

Thanks for the reply.I have tried the hot water bottle and as you say,it does help.

I find the dosages being mentioned in the replies attached to this article shocking. Firstly, imodium is the bramd name for loperamide. The active ingredient is one and the same, so you woll see no difference between them.

In terms of alternatives to imodium / loperamide, before anythung else, try different foods. I have had Crohn's for over 30 years and have had 17 operations, so it's pretty severe. I find that I know some foods bind me up, like boiled eggs, steak and bread & butter. You will have your own list. Use those rather tha heavy prolonged doses of drugs. Make sure you drink lots with them, so that it does not go too far the other way and have patience. The gut takes hours to react, even to drugs, not minutes.

I hope you feel better soon.

Picasso10 profile image
Picasso10 in reply toStevington

Thanks very much for your reply.I will certainly try what you advise.I have heard previously about the boiled eggs but never heard of the other ones.

Stevington profile image
Stevington in reply toPicasso10

The foods which slow things down or speed them up are very individual. Notice how your own body reacts. Personally a plate of lentils has the same impact as quite a strong dose of laxatives, but I have veggie friends who get no effect from them at all. Think like Alice in Wonderland, with the bottle in one hand and the cake in the other. I also use probiotics. King's College Hospital introduced me to VSL#3 and to Symprove. The former agrees with me, the latter doesn't, so I don't use it. Both are available on Amazon.

I hope you find something which works for you.

Hi, I totally agree imodium is a brand name for loperamide but we are talking about imodium comfort which is a tablet not a capsule so firstly it doesn't have a plastic coating and secondly it has an ingredient to help with bloating, wind and cramps. Therefore it is different. The plastic coating can massively affect IBS etc.

Also, you mention you are shocked at the dosages mentioned in the post. I take 32 of these a day, every day and will do for the rest of my life. It is safe to do so as prescribed by my gastrointrologist specialist. I'm not saying everyone should take this much, but I'm saying it's very hard to take an unsafe amount of them. Anyone should speak to their specialist, everyone is different. You can get imodium comfort on prescription too so it doesn't have to cost the earth. Everyone on here is trying to help, so negative comments when you haven't taken the time to actually read the previous posts isn't helpful and just causes confusion!

Thanks for the reply.I agree with you.My problem was I panicked and took Imodium for too long when I didn't need to.I have bought Imodium Comfort in case I need it again but I'll be much more careful if I have to take Imodium again.Sorry to hear about your problems,it has made me realise how lucky I am.A lot of people have much bigger problems than me.

Dexy16 profile image
Dexy16 in reply toPicasso10

That's very kind, but no one problem is worse than another. There is always someone who has what seems like a worse problem, but if it's impacting your life then it is a big deal! You'll get there, you just need to find the balance that suits you. Good luck with everything, I'm always here if you need any imodium advice!

Thanks!

in reply toStevington

I find that steak binds me up as well and also hard boiled eggs abd unripe bananas are helpful as well.

imodium in itself is great but it only treats symptoms it doesn't treat what's causing the problems.

hi

the calcium carbonate and kaolin tablets are very good for stopping diarrhea as they bind you up and make the stool more solid and less frequent.

Picasso10 in reply to

Thanks for the reply.I will try this because I don't want to take Imodium again unless I really have to.

SueMount profile image
SueMount in reply toPicasso10

I wouldn't recommend using imodium all the time. Only use it when you really have to. I don't think long termm use is good for your system. I suffer with IBS food and stress related. Travel is a particular trigger for me. I only use Imodium if I have to go on a journey.

Hi, how long before your journey do you take to Imodium

SueMount profile image
SueMount in reply toBeauchiefgolf

About 1 hour before leaving the house.

SueMount profile image
SueMount in reply toBeauchiefgolf

I usually start with the D as soon as I get up on the morning of travel. I usually wait until I have had D about 4 times and then if it doesn't settle I take tablet about 1 hour before leaving house.
