Tendonitis

How to treat tendonitis yourself

Follow these steps for 2 to 3 days to help manage pain and to support the tendon.

  • Rest: try to avoid moving the tendon for 2 to 3 days.
  • Ice: put an ice pack (or try a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel) on the tendon for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours.
  • Support: wrap an elastic bandage around the area, use a tube bandage, or use a soft brace. You can buy these from pharmacies. It should be snug, not tight.

It's important to take a bandage or brace off before going to bed.

When you can move the injured area without pain stopping you, try to keep moving it so the joint does not become stiff.

To help prevent further injury or pain, try to avoid:

  • heavy lifting, strong gripping or twisting actions that make the symptoms worse
  • playing sports, until the tendon has recovered

Symptoms of tendonitis

There are tendons all over your body. They connect your muscles to bones in your joints, for example, in your knees, elbows and shoulders.

The main symptoms of tendonitis are:

  • pain in a tendon that gets worse when you move
  • difficulty moving the joint
  • feeling a grating or crackling sensation when you move the tendon
  • swelling, sometimes with heat or redness

Treatment for tendonitis from a GP

A GP may prescribe a stronger painkiller or suggest you use a NSAID cream or gel on your skin to ease pain.

If the pain is severe, lasts a long time, or your movement is limited, you may be referred for physiotherapy. You can also choose to book appointments privately.

If physiotherapy does not help, you may be referred to a doctor who specialises in muscles and bones (orthopaedic specialist) or a local musculoskeletal clinic.

Some people with severe tendonitis may be offered:

  • steroid injections, which may provide short-term pain relief (this cannot be offered for problems with the achilles tendon)
  • shockwave therapy, which may help with healing
  • platelet rich plasma injections (PRP), which may help with healing
  • surgery to remove damaged tissue or repair a ruptured tendon

Preventing tendon problems

Tendonitis is usually caused by sudden, sharp movements or repetitive exercise, such as running, jumping or throwing.

Tendonitis can also be caused by repetitive movements, or having poor posture or technique while at work or when playing a sport. This is known as repetitive strain injury (RSI).

You cannot always prevent tendonitis. But there are things you can do to help reduce the chance of a tendon injury.

  • warm up before exercising and gently stretch afterwards

  • wear supportive shoes for exercise, or insoles

  • take regular breaks from repetitive exercises

  • do not over-exercise tired muscles

  • do not start a new sport without some training or practice

  • do not do the same repetitive exercises

Symptoms of tendonitis include pain, stiffness and swelling in a joint.

You can usually ease symptoms of tendonitis with rest, ice packs, and support, such as a brace. A GP may suggest painkillers or physiotherapy.

Warming up before exercising and wearing supportive shoes can help reduce your risk of tendonitis.

medical complications

So because i am weaker on my right side, apparently i'm putting most of my weight on my left leg. this has caused achilles tendonitis. and because it hurts to walk i have been more stationary which is probably the cause of swelling in my legs and feet. because of the above i have fallen a few times lately

Supraspinatus Tendonitis

Hello all After getting severe pains in the upper arms on lifting and lowering them for many years and having tried physiotherapy exercises without any success, my GP has finally diagnosed supraspinatus tendonitis as the condition. The option I have been given is a steroid injection.

knee tendonitis

my husband (61) ruptured his knee tendon. He had surgery two weeks ago and has to keep it in a straight leg brace for six weeks. A few days ago his OTHER knee became extremely painful. It seems to be locked. Phoned hospital and they say it’s probably caused by overcompensating for the immobile leg.

Running with Achilles tendonitis

Is it a bad idea to run with this injury? I did couch to 5k about 4 or 5 years ago. Progressed through 10k and even managed a half marathon. I’d had the odd calf, ankle problem that was usually put right by a bit of rest and then 2 years ago things got a lot worse. I had about 9 months of private

GABA & 5HTP for anxiety

I’ve got my trigger finger ready to order GABA and 5 HTP online to help with anxiety & sleep…But a Reddit forum warns of heart risks with 5HTP and suggest L-tryptophan is safer. So I thought I’d consult the hive first for feedback. Has any of these helped anyone here? What was your dosage if so? Any

Week 6 Run 3 Slow but enjoying it!

I have just finished my week 6/run 3. A 25 minute jog without stopping. I still can’t believe it! I have definitely found keeping to a routine has worked for me. My Dad has been my inspiration. He has Alzheimer’s, and running was one of his loves. I keep him up to date when I’ve done a long run. My

How to get back to running!

I have not run for about 3 months due to tendonitis in my foot. I'm getting to the point of thinking I can start running again in the new year. Just wondering how to get back into it. I had been running for several years before my injury and regularly ran 10km, and have done several HM.

Reformer and Rebounding

I have done reformer Pilates for 14 years but after my parathyroidectomy and partial thyroidectomy I lost most of the strength I’d built up and had a lot of joint pain. I was miserable and angry but it was either carry on or give up completely so I’m still plodding away, still angry some days but it

New PMR symptoms or not?

Since last week when I came down from 14 to 13 I have developed tendonitis in my right heel and sciatica in my left buttock and leg, neither of which I have had before. Could these be new symptoms of my PMR or just bad luck but if due to PMR what should I do with my Pred dosage?

Change from Teva to other brand of levothyroxine.

I Have been experiencing wide ranging joint and connective tissue aches and tendonitis and after nearly year of being on prescription for Hashimoto's these issues have not resolved and worsening in certain areas. I'll give it a couple of months and then retest bloods.

some of the diy solutions for riding with foot drop

so when I first started having trouble with foot drop it made keeping my feet on the recumbent pedals tough so I made little wooden pads that clipped to my pedals, they were carved to fit my feet exactly thereby cradling my foot to the pedals and was able to ride like that for several more years
