Pull ups

I'm hoping to try the strength and flex programme for the first time tomorrow. Can anyone suggest alternatives on how to do the pull ups? I'm not sure how I'll be able to do these at home.

hey

I had the same problem when I started and the only mini park near me was not gated so I had to just skip that one, decided to try other beginner exercises instead

hi leeds230, you may consider shopping online for a bar that can be attached near the top within a door frame. that may be the toughest way to do a pull-up though and not at beginner level.

One method is to stand on something which puts you at the top of the movement, take your weight and slowly, in a controlled manner, lower yourself down to the lowest position. You will strengthening the same muscles you use for pull ups.

Another, is to tie a rope around a tree branch, beam in a building etc. Tie the other end around a stout bar/stick/broom handle at a height (say 1 metre), lie on the floor, grab the handle and pull yourself upwards. As you get stronger raise the handle heigher. This is like doing 'rows' and 'Lat-pull downs'.

If you have access to a gym the they are likely to have an assist machine for pull-ups and chins. A gym will definately have a 'Lat pull down' machine.

We have an outside gym facility at a community centre nearby so I may take a walk down & see what it's like xx
