A quick bit of research unearthed this bit of information. May be of help to you.
From the vitamin D council.
"A recent study found that restless legs syndrome is more frequent and more severe in vitamin D deficient individuals. Additionally, vitamin D deficiency was associated with poor sleep quality."
I have RLS for 6 years...I have an excess of Iron...Doctor recommends blood donations. But when I was experimenting with Iron ...upset stomach/bad constipation
/black stool. In my search for making life bearable i tried different forms of iron I found a brand of Iron referred to as Iron Bisglycinate...Now what is unique about
this type of iron it passes the blood brain barrier (gets into your brain)The other forms of iron do not. and it also seems not to be so hard on stomach... The Vitamin D3 ,from my understanding is involved in a whole bunch of functions in the body.
The Sun has a whole bunch of different types of Vit D and who knows what else.
They say it is best to stand naked outdoors for something like 15 minutes or so
until you get a light red skin color. (by that time the neighbors have called the
cops and you end up in jail..then put on the pervert list...best to stick with the D3.
I actually stopped taking the gentle iron in the summer as rls had "gone away".. but I discovered now that it was the prescribed vit D I had to take with steroids for 3-4 months..
So every night when it starts...I get up and take mabe a second vit D tablet and an iron (bisglycinate)
as you say also magnesium and b vitamins..
It stops the rls..
So as we get older...we don't assimilate our vitamins from food so well..plus myself I don't get out in the sun much..(working and being fair)... Let alone standing naked on my doorstep... but sunbathing is good I know... although in moderation.
Thank you for your reply.
Hope these findings help others who are suffering.
i am taking vitamin pills all day. i guess i dont lack anything. no matter what i do nothing helps. latest researches found a possible malfunction of mitochondria that cause rls.
A clue to what causes it is that many people like me have overcome RLS completely or in the most part by adopting a diet. Hence the hypothesis is that RLS is caused by some sort of food deficiency or an intolerance to some food that is frequently eaten. All you have to do is figure out what to alter in your diet. You will do this before your 100th birthday if you adopt a systematic approach.
I am off to the store for Vit D and Vit K this morning.
Also, along with Magnesium and Potassium and a good B complex....i just read about trace minerals, specifically Boron, being studied and found helpful in treatment of Rheumatoid patients.
I have been on an elimination diet that led me to low carbs and RA and RLS has improved significantly.
I am grateful I do not need to take any meds at present.
I eat very low carbs, very low sugar, take vitamin D, Vitamin B, magnesium citrate, and maintain an excellent diet and still have severe RLS. The only relief I get is from the Iron Bisglycante tablets and a very low dose .25 mg of ropinirole about 7 pm. I do have to manage constipation with the iron tablets but feel it's doable mostly through diet and an occasional Chinese tea which I drink at night. That has all been learned through a lot of trial and error with other meds which I eventually could not tolerate for one reason or another.
