I have recently given up smoking does everyone put on weight as this really concerns me

When you quit smoking, and i think we've all felt this empty feeling, so we tend to snack!! but saying that, if you exercise, like most of us do, then you burn the cals off as you go, not only that, i really think that exercise helps you to quit !! well i know that if i have a bad time i get on my rowing machine and give it ''hell''
I think the main thing is to quit smoking because that is doing you more harm than wieght, and when you have mastered that, you can master anything

Hello Tango57 and welcome to our community. You've come to the right place for help and support with your quit.
Smoking increases your metabolism and when you quit that goes down 10 per cent so you naturally put a minimal amount of weight on. The problem we're all finding though is that to help curb the smoking craving we're shovelling extra snacks in thinking this is gonna help! I think that psychologically it does and the main thing, like Pete said, is to number 1: quit the fags. Once we're more comfortable with that then we have to tackle the weight problem!
We've done blogs and questions on snacking and healthy eating so you might like to have a trawl back through the archives and find some helpful hints and tips.
Of course, weight gain is always to do with the equation of calories in and calories out! To try and combat that most of us are doing some kind of extra exercise to TRY to help!
We hope you come and join in our daily chat then we can all try to help each other to stay on the straight and narrow.

I hope you are enjoying looking around our blog, there are lots of lovely quitters on here aswell as Stop Smoking Advisors who can answer any questions or give support/advice .
In relation to weight gain, have a little look on this site stopsmoking.org.uk/content/... There is plenty of information here but please remember stopping smoking is a lot healthier.
Try planning your snacks, prepare fruit and veg in the fidge instead of picking on biscuits, frozen grapes is a good one too.

Hi thanks for your reply I have now done 2 weeks not smoking which I can,t believe as I have smoked for 35 years. I haven't gained any weight which I am pleased about but have always had a sweet tooth and eat chocolate every day. I have been prescribed Champix from my doctors but don,t seem to need the dose they recommend and have on ly been taking 1 tablet a day instead of 2. Not sure if this method was good or bad as heard quite negative results about these. I take one day at a time.

Like you I was worried about weight gain.. Still am a little bit if I'm honest.. But so far I'm only 3 days in and can't say I've been too bad.. However I haven't brought any goodies for the cupboard but instead brought fruit like grapes strawberries and carrots something I can grab quick from the fridge should I need to. But like I say so far I'm not really snacking although I'm sure I'd there we're biscuits etc I would be running to the cupboard faster than usain bolt!!
Sugar free gum is helping me right now.. Think I'm eating it by the packet load!!
But honestly if I put a little weight on whilest I quit in the long run I know I can loose it again once im done.. Because I think like monky says once you quit you can master anything.

I stopped smoking at the end of Feb and did put half a stone on really quickly... its took until now to only lose 4lb but do I care ? No not really. My self esteem is so much better being smoke free that as Pete says you can master the weight issue once you've cracked the smoking addiction. Good luck. Don't let the weight issue stop you stopping, it's a real positive step you're taking.
I have smoked for 28 years. I have lived in two countries outside the UK in the last 10 years both of which you could freely smoke and the price of a packet of ciggies was under Β£2 so that was my first excuse "it is so cheap and no one cares if I smoke i can do this forever!" I have always carried extra weight and my hubby smokes so my other excuses were " I have got to lose weight, and I will give up when my husband does" well I am 3 months as a non smoker now, I decided to finally do it for me and me only and I have not regretted it once,I haven't gained weight, my hubby is still smoking and I haven't saved a vast amount of money, I have had the odd craving especially when I have had a few drinks but the cravings are momentary and far and few between.I can honestly say I already feel so much better, I have no regrets and will do everything I can to remain a non smoker for ever now!!
