Hi everyone, just joined and havent stopped yet. Quick back story, i have alpha 1, emphysema and COPD and a load of other health probs. I am on last day of antibiotics for particularly bad case of pneumonia. Just can't breath. If i don't stop going to be dead in a year. Today i have made the decision to stop. I'm 53 and been smoking 20 a day 30 sometimes for 30 years! Any tips? Not going to be easy...

Hello Angelee, welcome to Quit Support and well done on your decision to quit. It won't be easy as you say but it easier with support from others who know what you are going through.

May I suggest that you have a look at the pinned posts which you will find either to the right or at the bottom of your screen. There you will find lots of useful tips and information to support you in your quit.

Its a good idea to make a plan, to help with cravings ie change your routines, if you normally have a cup of coffee and a cig in the morning, change it may tea, get up and do something as soon as you have eaten...cleaning your teeth is a good one, keep active and distracted such as going for a walk or reading a book.

Keep coming on here for support, ask questions, for a moan or even a laugh. We like laughs!

Remember to drink plenty of water, to keep you hydrated and flush out those nasty toxins.

Let us know when you quit and we will add you to the database and assign you a progress badge so you and every one else can see how well you are doing.

Bye for now.😊😊

Hi Angelee, Welcome to quit support. Our lovely Corrina has given you good advice. I feel for you with the copd etc., I too suffer with that. Exercise even though its hard does help.

Also you may already know but there is a copd community on healthunlocked. I found very useful too. We will support you through your quit journey. Look forward for when you start. :) xxxx

Hello Angelee, when I decided to quit, I made lists of things to do to keep me busy. Also read, educate yourself on smoking. There is so much information as to why we smoke, why we continue to smoke, also how much our bodies are affected by smoking. I actually felt tired for about three months, which is normal. Our bodies do a lot of adjusting when we quit. Congratulations on your decision to quit!!

Thanks. I like reading, especially learning stuff so i like the idea of looking into what you said. Any particular books or web sites you recommend? x

Allan Carr has many books on how to quit smoking and as to why we smoke. I also saved this sites thehealthy.com/addiction/smoking/quit-smoking-heal/

quitsmokingonline.com

smokefree.gov/quit-smoking/why-you-should-quit/benefits-of-quitting

You might not have to type in all the wording after the .com or .gov addresses. It comes up in the address bar, but it is gray not the black address wording. I save these sites because I felt the information was good. Sometimes there will be additional sites you can go to. Hope this helps.. :)

It's good you have made your mind up to stop. and wishing you good luck....I had smoked for more than 50 years!!..I found Champix to be the best ..I couldn't do it cold Turkey.or with the patches as I'd end up like Mr Blobby..I sometimes get an urge to smoke.but it's been 9 months now.and I feel proud what I've done...

Similar situation & I’m now quit 17 months, so here to announce it is doable. If I’d ever let myself think smoking again was an option I would’ve gone back. I had to decide no going back, not one puff, no bargains with myself, simply not an option because really, it wasn’t. Might not have died that very day, but it was going to be my death for sure. Meant I had to find other ways to deal with life. Lots of new things came in (yoga, walking, classes, etc.) - some came & went, some stuck. All the best. You can do it. When the fight is hard, someone here will give you help until you can manage on your own. You’ve found a good group. Guard up, fists up, fight for your life. 👊

Hi - So sorry you have health issues too. What have you got if you don't mind me asking - it would be nice for someone to understand the sheer panic when you get to top of stairs and are gasping for breath and feel like you will die cos you can't breath - literally! Has your health/breathing improved over the 17 months? I'm hoping to say your health has improved drastically and now you are doing much betther :) and well done x

I have asthma and moderate COPD. Yes, I feel better since quitting but still do get breathless sometimes. However, my oxygen levels are improved absolutely. I used to struggle to get them above 92 - 93.

Hi Angelee stopping smoking is a must for someone with COPD. I was diagnosed with COPD in 2006. When I stopped smoking my lung function went from 40% to 60%. All the best with your quit.
