Decided to stop.............

phil_stutt profile image
11 Replies

I have a friend who has just been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. I always knew of the dangers but it would never happen to me. His diagnosis has helped me to decide to stop, again. 40+ years and now on 40 a day. I will stop midnight on Friday 22nd May.

Both looking forward, and dreading it at the same time....................

Hiya Phil and welcome to quit support😃

I'm very sorry to hear of your friends diagnosis and understandably a very difficult time.

We are here to support you through your quit, which is the very best thing you can do for your health. Believe in yourself that you can do this and you will succeed. The support from this group can make a huge difference, as without it I know I wouldn't be where I am today. Have you decided on how you're going to quit as in cold turkey or NRT? It's a good idea to have a plan ready and there's plenty of good advice here, so please have a good look around the site. Any questions we'll be happy to help.

Once again, welcome to our quit family👍😃x

Hi Phil and welcome to quit support.. I am sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis.

Congratulations on making the decision to quit smoking, it truly is the best possible thing you can do for your own health.

Like the other have said, have a look under the topic headings and arm yourself with all the knowledge that you can :) :)

See all previous attempts as a practice run for this time :) :)

spend the next few days really getting your head in the right place for your quit. Believe that you can do it and you will :) :) we are all here to help you any way we can :) :)

All the very best of luck :) :)

Thanks Linda. I am thinking of strategies and tactics. I feel excited and scared. My spreadsheet of my savings is up and running! I am showing the cost of my last few days smoking so that I have a comparison to remind me. The savings are ear marked for both actual savings and things I want as rewards.

I have a touch stone to keep my hands occupied and a list of reasons why I am gong to stop to remind me when it gets hard. I have also told friends and am going to post my progress on my blog. I really do not want to write the one where I say "I failed"...............

Loving your attitude Phil...Honestly get your head in right space, I downloaded an app to show me how much i haven't spent on smokes.

I quit cold turkey after 40 years of 30 a day.. I am almost 11 months and would have spent over $7000 ( In Australia here )

Rewarding yourself is brilliant...see it as a new healthier you rather than quitting something :) :)

Your positive attitude will hold you in good steed :) :)

Hi again Phil, sorry I didnt say much earlier :( but I was at work and dont get much time :P

You sound as though you have a good quit plan going their :) ermm, have you thought about using any NRT to help you get through your quit :o and what about your GPs or local chemist, do they have a quit smoking cessation in place :o

Phil, I think the most important thing is, you really have to want to quit to be successful :) soooo, in the next few days, I would keep reminding yourself WHY you want to quit :)

I see you've had lots of great advice already from some of our lovely members :) so, just ask if you need any more advice or a bit of help, cos thats what this lovely community is all about :)

Good luck :) Pete :)

Hi Phil

So how many cigarettes do you actually enjoy in a day.

I found that at least 14 of my daily 20 were needed just for the sake of it. Even forcing myself to smoke when ill.

Now could I just make do with those 6 I enjoyed?? no because I had to top up and keep my nicotine high.

This now turned into a nicotine battle. After a few weeks using NRT I managed to disassociate myself from physically smoking.

I'm in a good place now as all I need to do is control the NRT but I am not rushing that and will do it when I'm ready.
