quit for 4 weeks now..... but my breathing is worse than when I smoked! I gasp for breath.... Why is this and how long will it last. I did have a major operation 4 weeks ago - which is why I stopped smoking. Surely the Anathesthetic is out of my system by now?

Any advice or help would be gratefully received.

Congratulations 👏🎉🎉🎉🎉4 weeks is a long time to be off cigarettes..... Sometimes surgery can take a couple months to get your strength back but also people have mentioned that they feel breathless after they quit....... I'm not a dr but I hope this is what is going on and nothing else...... Have a read on the site and people will get back to you with their experiences

Take great care🎄

Hiya dkoerk and welcome to quit support😊 4 weeks quit is brilliant so well done👏🏼

Unfortunately we can sometimes feel worse and shortness of breath can be a side effect of quitting. It would be best to get checked out by your Doctor especially as you're only 4 weeks after major surgery. Best to be on the safe side and it will put your mind at rest. Lots of help available here, so have a good look round the site and especially the pinned posts on the right. We all help one another to stay quit and our motto is NOPE not one puff ever😊x

Congratulations on your 4 weeks quit! Marvelous!

As for your breathing issue -- You may find some posts of interest here by individuals with breathing issues -- However: I wouldn't hesitate to consult a doctor.

Hi djoerk and welcome to quit support

Well done on your 4 weeks quit, that is awesome.

I do hope that you are well on the mend from your surgery :) :)

Shortness of breath is quite common after quitting smoking, and everyone is different for how long this may last. Like the others have said, to be on the safe side, i too would suggest just getting yourself checked by your GP.

Don't let this distract you from remaining quit...most of us feel worse before we feel better :) :)

Please let us know your quit date so we can add you to our wall of winners :) :)

Thanks for your help.

My quit date was the 18th November 2015...and so far so good bar the breathlessness.

Hi and congratulations! Please please go and see your gp and have a check for pulmonary embolism. Not trying to scare you, but better safe than sorry. Treatment is very well tolerated and must be received ASAP.

Breathlessness is one thing - gasping is another.

All the best
