Desperate mornings.

Hey all, hope you are good.

I'm finding the longer I've quit for, the more I'm desperate I am for a smoke. The worst is I wake up in the morning absolutely gasping for one. I use 24 hr patches and reapply them at night so this shouldn't be happening.

I knew that an easy first week would go punished later!

Hi......aw sorry I don't know your real name, I've not being paying attention. Yes, those first few weeks really are the worst so I know how much you want to smoke now. It's not punishment, just your brain desperately prodding you, trying to remind you - hey - you've not had a ciggie for ages, have you forgotten or something.

I think mornings are probably the worst for everyone. After all that always was THE most important, most satisfying smoke of the day I always think, so its bound to be the hardest habit to kick. You'll be OK. Try to do stuff in a different order so the triggers and prompts that make you want to smoke aren't there, although unfortunately you've gotta get up at some point I suppose :D Does your patch not help? Do you use anything else as well like chewing gum or an inhalator or anything?

I thought the patch was helping but it's like it's just not anymore. I have an inhalator too but I'm a bit weird about using it. Dunno if I'm paranoid about becoming addicted to that instead or what but I tend not to use it.

And I'm Ellie :)

My daily routine was always get up,coffee,2 cigs and then I was ready to go.The morning 2 even after 4 months are still the ones I miss the most. Why not try an inhilator as well as your patches just so you have that hand to mouth action. It might be a help.I used to clean the kitchen first thing (unload dishwasher, clean benches etc) ANYTHING to keep my mind off those cigs.I truly have high hopes that you'll smash this because I absolutely know you can, also know that it will get better each and every day.

Ellis, STUPID me just read that you do have an inhilator (put it down to the painkillers I'm taking!!!) Don't be scared about getting addicted.I started using 18mg of nicotine and got down to 6mg after 3 months, it's all about small steps which make giant leaps.

Hi Ellie

Hope your feeling better now and i hope this isn't a sign that i have all this in front of me as i too found the first week relatively easy! What's worked for me in the mornings is I've continued having my morning coffee without smoking along with it.I think (well hope!) I've broke the association of coffee with smoke in the morning. So I'm not really missing the morning smoke atol anymore

Yup I agree with everything Sinfree says, the mornings were truly evil, notice the 'were' here it did get better but still bites sometimes and I am 5 months on the 29th January. I use and inhalator and mini niquitabs and bunged both of those in as soon as I woke up. then eventually I started taking a cup of tea back to bed with me and listened to the radio for a bit.. You are definitely not being punished it will get better promise. X

Hey Ellie, I quit using the inhalator, I found it a godsend first thing in a morning. May be you could try it just first thing. :)

Hey Ellie, don't you worry - how you are feeling now is all part of the recovery process :-)

You've been given some fab advice so far from all above and I promise you that feeling this way won't go on forever :-)

The thing with these pesky cravings (or symptoms of recovery) is that they come in all shapes, sizes and strengths. At first they appear to turn up quite often, and we learn how to overcome them more readily :-) However, given time they become weaker in themselves and tend to back off a bit - I reckon that during this 'backing off' period they are just trying to muster up enough strength and energy so that they can suddenly make an appearance and try and catch us out... Quite often they do.

I would continue using the patch and as already suggested, use your inhalator as and when you need it. The trick is not to inhale on it, put it in your mouth, point it to the roof of your mouth and kind of 'tut' on it.

You are doing really well so keep up what you are doing and keep on letting us know how it is for you, we can help then ;-)

It's funny isn't it?! It's because it's called an 'inhalator', people think you should inhale them. We get a lot of complaints that it catches the back of the throat and tastes awful.. this is because it is pure nicotine - and (as with cigarettes) no chemicals that will numb the airways allowing for smoke and nicotine to travel more easily to the lungs.

The nicotine gets in your system through the mucous membrane within your mouth instead. Much better for you than what is in tobacco and smoke ;-)
