The cheap, horrid pessaries the NHS tries to fob us off with in UK are made of PVC. Others are made of silicone rubber. They can make you feel a bit sore and dry, but they should not affect your hormones, any more than a tampon would.

How do you find out what pessaries are made of? I thought it was silicone? Mine says this…Ring pessary 1.25cm thick, 71mm diameter, PVC. So what’s the PVC???

Do let us know what the Nurse or Doctor says. I only got mine replaced last week but never read what it said. It's been all good up to now but I find that I can go to the toilet, then 2 minutes later, cough, and I wet myself. The nurse said she thought I needed a bigger one and to get in touch with GP. And to be honest I'm frightened to speak to GP in case she recommends the operation ! I'm 68 and had the pessary ring for 9 years.

Well, as it bugged me so much I did research and found out that the nhs pessary is PVC not silicone. Story is, first pessary fitted by Nhs when first diagnosed with uterine prolapse was PVC, it kept falling down. As I couldn’t get an appt with gp resorted to private and had next size fitted, which has been really good and worked well. However after 5months I went back to Nhs clinic to get checked and pessary changed. Everything was fine but doesn’t feel so good as before. So when I read that Nhs uses PVC pessaries made me wonder what the private hosp had used. After detective work, found it was silicone!!!! Well they did charge £50 for it and seems big price difference on amazon betweenPVC and silicone. So I’m trying to convince myself it’s fine and give it a go! I’m stuck with it for now as hoping to travel for a few weeks and no way can I get an appt with Nhs or private in next few days. So not sure if it’s imagination that the silicone felt more comfortable or it’s all in my mind.!!!??? Hope it lasts out and then I will go back to private, sorry but Nhs seems to always use cheaper options, same with my glaucoma, another story. Luckily feel in position to have a choice, but there is a 2tier society I’m afraid!

Just an update for anyone interested! The nhs pvc type didn’t work as well as my original private silicon one! So in desperation as going away luckily got an appt bak at private hosp, fitted theirs which are silicone, tho they did look identical visually, and seems so much better again! Pschyco or real!!!!??????
