I’ve been having pelvic pain for about 6 months so my Gyno sent me for an ultrasound- both the external one and the internal/ transvaginal ultrasound. They failed to inform me I was supposed to consume 34 ounces of water to prepare for the external one, so the tech tried to compensate by pressing really hard.
I thought that was painful, but the internal one felt like pure torture. It literally felt like she was stabbing me with a knife in there. Also at one point whilst pushing that wand in extremely hard she also pushed down on my left ovary so hard I nearly screamed.
Later that night I had some somewhat heavy spotting; it started as red blood, and by the next day turned to brown and then stopped. I thought that was it, but the same thing happened again for the past two nights again; late at night just as I’m getting ready for bed, I get this red heavy-ish spotting, that gradually turns to brown during the next day and eventually stops, only to start up again at night. I am on the Depo shot and haven’t had periods since being on it.
What could be causing this? I tried to call my doctor earlier because also the results were supposed to be in today also, and the receptionist said they would have her call me back but she never did. Now I’m stuck worrying about this until Monday.

When I had a transvaginal ultrasound, I had exactly the same bleeding pattern as you. I'd been investigated for pelvic pain, but nothing was found on ultrasound...so my bleeding wasn't from fibroids, which was one reason it might have been. I saw my doctor the next day, she did swabs to look for infection...as that can make the cervix tender and bleed, but no infection was found. So the conclusion they came to was the trauma of the wand caused the bleeding as it was used quite aggressively and as it's not a very dignified procedure, then there was probably tension, so making it more harsh on the fragile skin inside.
I would be very interested to hear what they conclude for you. Xx
The bleeding was for 3 days on and off. Then once I'd had swabs taken, that seemed to disturb it again and it happened for another 2 days.
I sometimes get bleeding when an ovarian cyst bursts and I do have endometriosis. Don't think that caused my bleeding , but just other possible causes.
Hope your doctor has your scan results and can put your mind at rest about the bleeding. Hope to keep in touch.
Finally saw the doctor today. The test showed a thickened uterine lining and they confirmed the bleeding was coming from the uterus and not any kind of damage to the cervix. They believe that because of this thickened mucosal lining that whilst the uterus was “jostled around” during the test that it loosened some of this layer and that’s where the bleeding is coming from. Now they want me to go in for a sonohysterogram where they fill the uterus with saline so they can get a better look at why it’s so thickened and make sure there’s no problems hidden in there. I’m not looking forward to that
Hi, thanks for replying. Sorry that you have to go through more tests, but at least you are being cared for appropriately. My mum had this, and the thickening was accompanied by a fibroid, which was removed and she was fine. I wish you lots of luck.
