Does anyone know about B12 defficiency and PBC/AIH?
I have noticed vertical ridges on my finger nails and have done a wee bit of research and it seems it might be linked to a B12 defficiency? Any thoughts?
Hi Jtxx.
Not aware of B12 deficiency with PBC (can't go there with the Hep one), tends to be the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E & K, most often the D.
Without checking sure whomeal bread, malt and Marmite (I don't have much of that these days due to the salt content - tho' previously I only had a dessertspoon total wkly on toast as pread it very thinly), these have B12.
If you search for "living with liver disease" on line you can find a very informative site,(not specifically Pbc) that has a whole bunch of info including the topic of vitamins and minerals, click on the TAGS and you can find practically anything to do with liver disease. Goes without saying that you would need to chat with your own gp before taking any supplements etc but I have found out so much on this site. definatly worth a look.

Jtxx,
I have ridges and blood test indicates a B-12 deficiency.
I have been told that ridges on the nails was more to do with a Vit. E deficiency. 400mg/day helps, as well as helping your skin and hair. -:).
I did have a Dr. tell me about a month ago however that I needed B12 and preferrably the "sublingual" (under the tongue). It helps with energy and short term memory. Boy!! did I need that. LOL
