Hi, I am very recently diagnosed, am having an endoscopy to get a baseline for possible varices. Does any one know what happens if they DO find varices?

A rant too, 🤣 for decades any routine blood tests has been queried but never followed up. Only now after breast cancer and lots of blood tests has it been found. So I think it’s probably caused a lot of damage. I have to wait until Oct for a fibroscan. I’ve been on Urso so six weeks now. Thanks for reading. Xx

Evening 7443jec, think you’re probably overdue a good rant! 🤣

Seem to recall that when I had my endoscopy to check for varies, I signed consent that they could sort them out whilst they were at it! Think they tie them off or something similar?!

I’m sure someone else will chip in with the right words - anyhoo, hope you’re feeling ok and I wish you a fabulous evening, wherever you are in the world 🥳 x

I think they call it banding when I had my endoscopy it was clear of varies. I am sorry to read of your cancer and most welcome to rant anytime it took nigh on 10 years to get my diagnosis and even then I was accused of being an alcoholic by the GP.

With the endoscopy with hindsight I would have preferred to be sedated rather than the throat spray but it did mean I could leave hospital quicker.

thanks, I can’t decide whether to go for the throat spray or sedation, I don’t want to be there too long as a friend is taking me and I’ve had enough of hospitals lately. The irony is I am completely tee total, it’s very annoying.xx

As time goes by you will find many with PBC do not drink PBC is thought to have a genetic link triggered by environmental factors and has nothing to do with alcohol consumption. Do not let ill educated doctors or nurses lead you to believe otherwise, unfortunately some do!

Hi, I've had a couple of endoscopies where they have had to band varicies Personally I would rather be sedated than not (I'm a whooze who has a great imagination lol.). My bandings were done during the endoscopy - as mentioned above, I was asked to sing a form indicating that if needed banding would be done.

The usual procedure (here in Australia) is that varicies have to be a certain size before they are banded - mine were small when first found and they were monitored annually until they reached Grade 3 size.

Here is a link to a site with information about varicies and the different grades.

Thank you that was a very useful link. Now I understand why this is a necessary procedure. Bit worrying though isn’t it? Xx

Hi, I've had several endoscopies to check for varices and later went on to start having them banded. I would personally always go for the sedation, it's not a pleasant procedure. If your varices are small, they can manage them medically by trying to reduce your blood pressure. Unfortunately I couldn't as my blood pressure was quite low anyway and it was making me feel faint. Don't panic about it, you'll deal with whatever, and it could be all clear anyway.

Good luck x

It's thoughtful of you to think of your friend taking you, and what would be quicker but it may not be quicker to have throat spray if you find that uncomfortable and need to repeat the test with sedation. It really is for the best to think about what is best for you and not what would be more convenient for your friend. If you tell your friend about your concern re inconveniencing them, they will reassure you that it is your comfort/best outcome that matters. They will be rewarded to know they made a big difference.
