Endoscopy/H-pylori

Hi everyone,

So I had an endoscopy done 2 weeks ago and was told I have no varicies but have H-Pylori in my stomach :( They gave me 2 antibiotics along with some kind of antacid. They say that the kill off of the H-pylori will cause acid reflux (which I suffer no sort of symptoms now). 1 antiobiotic is Amoxicillin, 1000 mgs, twice a day and some other antibiotic (I dont have the name of it with me) also 2X a day. I am terrified how this will affect my liver. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

A couple of things. I am on antibiotics daily - for life - because I have no spleen. Also in an ideal world we (people with liver disease) would be better off not taking anything that our livers have to work hard to filter. However doctors have to weigh up the risks versus the benefits. The facts are that untreated infections can actually kill if they spread (sepsis). So we have no choice but to take antibiotics when a bacterial infection has been diagnosed. Try not to worry about it. Our livers process everything we put in our mouths and on our skins. If we worried about all of that life would be miserable! Get well soon 🍀

Thanks for your response. How awful. Do you take probiotics as well?

When I remember! 😉 Between URSO, antibiotics & multivitamins - all taken at different times of the day - I’m lucky to remember my name 😂 But you’re right - it’s good practice to take them after antibiotics. I prefer the natural route so I usually go for yoghurt.

Also forgot to mention, you should google manuka honey for treatment of h pylori - very interesting and impressive results. All natural. But the good/proper stuff is expensive.

Hi Donna1

I was treated for h pylori several years ago, the same as you with 2 antibiotics, I can't remember if it was a 1 or 2 week course. I hadn't been diagnosed with pbc then, although it seems I did have it then. Assuming your gp is aware of your pbc and the anti biotics, I don't think you need to worry about taking them for such a short time. If you're still worried phone your gp for reassurance. Good luck.x

I have to take them for 2 weeks! I do have PBC.. the goal was to make sure no varicies as of now just to be safe and they found H-Pylori!

I have had it since 2014. I don't know what stage I am because I refuse biopsy. I am not going to put myself at risk of bleeding for no reason. I go with my blood work and how I feel. Ultrasounds have all been normal

I've had pbc for about 7 or 8 years now, but I'm lucky so far it's not progressing much, although I am unable to take urso. My h pylori was found in tests which also eventually found I had gallstones. Better to have it treated though as it can cause problems. I think antibiotics are usually taken for 2 weeks.

Hi emerich. I had gallstones and had gallbladder removed about 5 years ago. I then was diagnosed with PBC a year later but no hpylori. And yes, 2 weeks on the antibiotics :(

I've heard of a lot of people who have had gallbladder issues, before being diagnosed with pbc. At least once you've completed the course you should be free of h pylori, it's supposed to be a one off treatment and it won't return, although I think it can very rarely. Hope all goes well.x

My specialist found pylori while checking for varacies and I was treated with strong antibiotics with no side affects. He said it can cause stomach ulcers which we don’t need .apoarantly they check us pbc ers for it routinely when doing endoscopy for varacies I have been tested since and it has not returned . Good idea for anyone with pbc to be tested at it eliminated

Donna I have been a nurse for a long time and also have pbc and had h pylori.... take the abc ... I believe the other one is flagella or metronidazole.... here in the states we use flagyl as our second drug. If untreated can cause peptic ulcer. I am all for natural if possible but the stakes are high here..... if the all natural approach does not work then you can have bleeding ulcers. Good luck and it’s ok to question your gi/liver doc if you need to. H pylori caused me such sharp stabbing abdominal pain and once treatment was done the pain was gone 😊

No, this has nothing to do with PBC. H Pylori is found in two thirds of the population and spread by mouth, usually from contaminated food or water. It is not a do it yourselfer and should be treated with antibiotics. It is also advisable to be re-tested after three years. After the antibiotics, you definitely should replace your gut flora with probiotics or yogurt. Best Wishes.

Hi Tanjah. I don't think anyone implied that it has to do with PBC. My question was if all the antibiotics were safe on the liver. They are retesting me after 2 weeks, not after 3 years. I am going to take probiotics with the antibiotics.

After being cured, it is prudent to be re-tested after three years.
