Antibiotics and PBC

When I had an endoscopy in order to check for varices, a large erosion /ulcer was found. Told I have helicobacter pylori bacteria and will need two antibiotic meds for a fortnight. Does anyone know if it is ok to have these antibiotics if one has PBC ? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes you have no choice. I had to take them for UTI. Was reluctant because so many antibiotics are hard on the liver & the one I took was. We have to get rid of the infections or we’ll be in more trouble. I know drs try their best to not cause undue harm, but still...

Thank you for replying. I will try to talk to the doctor who prescribed the antibiotics (not my normal doctor) as I don't think my PBC has been taken into consideration.

My internist prescribed it. I double checked with GI & he said no problem. Ha! I had problem letting myself take it. Yes, check with your dr. Surely there are some safer than others. Good luck😀

I also flooded myself with lemon water in hopes to help flush it through my liver.

Well they also found it in me (they look for it particularly with pbc patients) but no ulcer and they told me what could happen if it was undetected. I felt very fortunate and took the antibiotics.it took two lots to get rid of it. I have since tested again and I am free of it. I would think it was a no brainer with an ulcer to deal with but that’s a personal opinion

Sometimes the risks have to be weighed up against the benefits. Would it be better not to take antibiotics with PBC? Of course. However, and I don’t want to scare you here, an ulcer, particularly if it starts bleeding, can be a very serious thing - not to be underestimated at all. I have PBC but also no spleen. I have to take daily antibiotics- for life. One thing I have heard in relation to a supplementary treatment for ulcers is Manuka honey (the authentic type from New Zealand - it will be expensive). You would need to do your own research on this & of course follow your doctors advice. Hope this helps in some way.

I was told not to worry too much about a course of antibiotics as the benefits outweigh the risks, however I was told not to take tablets for a persistent cold sore I had.....as they are often too strong. I think sometimes we have to just tackle the problem medically and then treat the liver with respect! However I have bad back problems but try not to take painkillers, the consultant says I can take some if I have to, so its a matter of choice sometimes and thats hard to make. my close friend with a similar back problem has a better fuller active life with her back and her meds but she isnt suffering PBC at stage 4!

Yes..... I also had the antibiotic course for the same thing.
