Taking B12 injections daily.

Hi Guys and Girls,

This site has been a tremendous help and blessing for me and my GP, who knew little about PA.

I am injecting 1ml of methylcobalamin EOD, I have been injecting since Nov. 2021, in the early days, I really didn’t know what I was doing and my GP knew less, I was injecting once a month, once a week, every other month, every day up and down! After finding this site I began to understand this B12 deficiency, all of my tests including the last one showed all levels good or above average Folate, Homocysteine, Iron and the others. I really thank you guys for all your patience and understanding, since learning from this site I began injecting 1 ml methylcobalamin EOD, seriously, since August 2022. Improvement is slow and frustrating.

My question is, has anyone injected 1ml of methylcobalamin everyday, was there improvement faster, no change, slower. I still have the numbness in my hands, some difficulty walking, usual, body pains associated with B12 deficiency.

I read on this site, and other B12 sites, that you can’t overdose on B12, as extra is urinated, my GP, as advised that my kidneys function very well, therefore I urinate more often and more volume than most men, Prostate is fine.

Is there any danger in taking more than 1ml EOD, say 2, 3 or 4 ml or throughout the day.

Sorry for all the info, I am just impatient and frustrated, especially since all this happened because my GP, loaded me up on PPI’s for GERD, would be worse if I wasn’t eating my favorite food regularly sardines and shrimp, which I found out contain much vitamin B.

Thanking you all in advance for all your help, patience and guidance, God bless you all, and May we all recover rapidly!

Indeed you can't overdose, and if kidneys are fine, then i think you should be ok but i'm not medically trained.

I've done 2x daily for about 5.5 years now and sometimes add in a 3rd eg when i got covid or after surgery. I knew I needed 2x daily because by the evening i'd be stumbling around. Keeping a symptoms log can help you see what frequency is best.

Also double check what methyl dose is best. I vaguely rember that you need higher methyl doses to get the equivalent of 1mg hydroxo or cyano. So that could be holding you back too. Cyano & hydroxo are quite good, something to consider.

Best wishes! :)

Hi Jade_s, sorry to bug you again, I really appreciate your advice, would taking 1 or 2 ml ml everyday be too much, just from your experience? I am a big guy over 200 lbs not fat, I realize your not a doctor, but from this site I taught my GP, more about B12 deficiency than he knew! You guys have experience over theory which is what we need.

Given the comment below, you could try alternating methyl one day & cyano or hydroxo the other day. I cat answer if it's "too much" for you healthwise, but lots of us do daily so it can't hurt to try :)

The body needs both methylcobalamin (for energy) and adenosylcobalamin (for nerves). Cyanocolbalsmin and hydroxocolbalamin both convert to methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin but taking methyl alone will be incomplete. Therein likely lies your issue.

Oh goodness I had totally forgotten about that. Thanks for the reeminder!

The body converts from one to the other. Methylcobalamin will also convert to adenosylcobalamin. There is no evidence that "taking methyl alone will be incomplete". However some people find they get on better with one type than another.

Thats not what I’ve read from various sources, but you’re entitled to your opinion.

There's a lot of pseudo science online. Hopefully one of the admins or scientists on here can confirm what I'm saying. :-)

I have used 1.5mg hydroxocobalamin every day for 7 years and know of others who have injected daily for decades to good effect. There's quite a lot of us who inject every day.

I have a friend who uses a couple of the 1.5mg ampoules a day and therefore has 3mg daily. There are quite a few I know of who do 2 injections a day to give themselves 2mg.

However they also are using hydroxocobalamin and I would be much more wary of frequently using methylcobalamin because you can over methylate and cause problems from the methyl group rather than the cobalamin part of the molecule.

If you really don't methylate properly and need a methyl group then I think it is preferable to use methylfolate tablets along with hydroxocobalamin injections.

Please make sure you have the correct levels of all vitamins and minerals, particularly B vitamins, potassium, magnesium, iron and vitamin D as well. Without the right balance of everything your B12 will not be utilised properly so no amount of extra will be of benefit.

Hello, when I was first diagnosed my doctor put me on twice a week injections and I was not getting better. I then went to every other day and wasn’t seeing much improvement still. Then I started on every day injections and did have improvement. Numbness and tingling went away. After about a year of every day injections, I decided to try to go back down to every other day and I do notice pins and needles but not as bad as they used to be. Right now I’m going to try to stay with every other day and hope it doesn’t get worse.

I was wondering when you inject the second one. If you do it later in the day does it ever keep you awake? I've always done just one shot in the morning. I've been afraid to do one after about noon. So, if I miss the morning, I have to skip my shot.

What do you think?

Are you asking me? It sometimes gives me a boost at night for about half an hour but I can sleep no problem. Give it a try on a calm day when you don't have anything important the next day. Afternoon shouldn't give you any problems, i would think.

I also have been on all variations of injection protocols. I started everyday with Hydroxo over a year ago and saw some improvement over EOD. For the past eight or nine months I have been doing 1 mg twice a day, once in the morning and once in late afternoon or early evening. It has been very successful for me. I also will sometimes do three/day if I am sick or feeling especially bad, but that is happening less and less frequently. I am in USA and get 60ml of hydroxo via Rx, but always keep extra supply of cyano on hand in case I need it. I used to have specially compounded methyl from a local pharmacy, but found it did not do anything for me.

I don't recommend this protocol for everyone, but if you are not seeing improvements on EOD, it won't hurt to try more frequently as long as you can keep a good supply. My hydroxo costs about $25USD per 30ml vial. Cyano from Canada is about the same when you add postage cost., but no Rx is needed. I am lucky in that my GP, Gastro, and Renal specialists all agree to take as much as you want, and you'll just pee out the excess.

I'm in the US too and am paying about $50 for 30ml cyano. Mailed from a place in California... And more expensive from Walgreens if I remember right. You are lucky. My GP will Rx it. I should check prices again.

For hydroxo at Walgreens, try the GoodRx discount card. goodrx.com It brings my price down to $20.48. Show this FREE coupon to your pharmacist at

Walgreens

$20.48

$49 retail Save 58%

Cyano is even cheaper at Target and Walmart. It may be different in your zip code however. Good luck.

I use this because Medicare does not cover vitamins regardless of the medical need.

American healthcare system is trash, but that is another subject..

Thank you very much for getting back.. Thanks for reminding me.. I have used GoodRx but I stopped when they raised the amounts for my thyroid med to meet Walgreens... Could be my area is just higher. In fact, it was cheaper until I updated my new address.

Walmart now is $17 w GoodRx here.

I have a pricey Medicare Drug Sup that pays for any cheap med. Haha never for the ones that count.

I would like to ask how many doses of Hydro do you get for that amount. Also do you need a prescription? I am assuming that is the case. I have the MTHFR gene and have had issues for years not realizing what the problem was. I am in the US and yes the health care system here is very bad.

scnuke profile image
scnuke in reply to birdsforme

Hi birdsforme, That price is for a 30ml vial, so I get get two vials per month and that gives me 60 doses/mo. I also buy cyano from biosenseclinic.com in Canada in case I use extra. Hydro seems to work best for me, but I do not hesitate to use cyano if I need extra or happen to run out of hydro. Everyone has the MTHFR gene, it's only a matter of which mutation is causing a problem, if any. There is a lot of controversy about it. I take 800 mg of folic acid daily and even with my aggressive injection routine, my folate levels are always at or above the high end of normal. Most people on this forum agree that daily, high dose folate is not called for and may mask other issues. But that kind of heresy will get you kicked out of some Facebook groups. 😱

Good luck and find what makes YOU feel better and keep doing it.

scnuke can I ask what US state you are in? How amazingly fortunate to have not just one but 3 doctors who are supportive! I'm in the US and have always had to hide my daily self treatment from my doctors. [I finally got one doctor to prescribe me weekly injections (which would be nowhere near sufficient, but I was hoping insurance would at least pay for that 1 injection) and my insurance denied it entirely. 🙄]

I am in Florida. I went many years suffering before I was diagnosed. I am lucky that most physicians give me more leeway due to my education and experience in healthcare. I recently switched to cyano from hydroxo since my latest Medicare plan will cover cyano. Only $18 for six 30ml vials, a ninety day supply. It's free if I switch to mail order! I will switch back to hydroxo if needed, but I expect the cyano will do fine. Fingers crossed.
