Serum Ferritin

Hi Can anyone help me - what is Ferritin needed for? Am still trying to make sense of my blood test results which showed my B12 was very high (was taking large supplements and injection prior to the test). Other results seem normal although the serum ferritin level had been 120+ for several years but then seems to have taken a dip to 76 ug/L . Is that relevant to anything?? Thanks!

Ferritin is only one part of a bigger picture of iron. It's in fact a protein that stores iron. It can if low cause symptoms. Cam be an indication your hb might go down

Can be a sign of thyroid problems.

Below 50ug/L can give symptoms.

I had symptoms at 29ug/l that resolved at 42ug/l

Your level seems very good.

120ug/l quite high for most of us unless pregnant . Such a large range!!

Just include if on your next bloods. 6 - 12 monthly

Mine went down after b12 injections. Was much higher even when I was ill awaiting b12 treatment

It can raise if inflammation in the body .

Thars as far as I understand it. Iron is complex

Mine was 20 in Dec and now 32.....I’m having days and weeks of extreme tiredness and dizziness. Cold hands and feet....are these symptoms of low ferritin? I’m on ferrous fumate - day 4.

They were some of my symptoms I was shaky and ashen and ongoing fatigue dizziness soon improved after b12 but could live been involved with low ferritin ?? I'm not sure.

Have you had your thyroid checked too?

(Cold hands and feet) ?

Some are fine with that level if ferritin. Some need to be around 50-70 to relieve symptoms. It should never be treated in isolation without a medic looking at the full iron picture.

Have you an old result tk know the benchmark?

My ferritin took a long time to raises and seems tk have settled at 50-58 after a year. We are all different .
