Should I investigate possible PA?

Hi everyone,

I have joined this community as I am wondering whether I should explore a potential PA diagnosis. I originally suspected a thyroid problem and through Thriva had a Thyroid panel done, my results were

Active B12 64 pmol/L. (37.5 - 188)

Ferritin 57 ug/L (13 -150)

Folate 11 nmol/L (8.8 - 60.8)

FT3 5.4 pmol/L (3.1-6.8)

TSH 3.86 mIU/L (0.27 - 4.3)

TgAB 340 kU/L (0 - 115)

TPOAb 15.2 kIU/L (0 - 34)

T4 100 nmol/L (66 - 181)

FT4 14.8 pmol/L (12 - 22)

Vitamin D 23 nmol/L (50 - 175)

These were a couple of months ago and I have received some helpful info regarding the Thyroid results from the Thyroid community who suggested that I visit over here too as my antibody levels could be related to PA.

Since those results I have supplemented with Vitamin 40000 units per week as per clinical guidelines, magnesium, vitamin K and vitamin b12 (igennus super b complex) 1 tablet per day.

I re cheked my levels and am waiting for my results. Just wondering if it is worth me investigating possible PA and if so how would I do so?

P.S I have been vegan since February this year and was taking H&B b complex.

Many thanks for any help or advice.

Those thyroid antibodies aren't related to PA, but to potential autoimmune thyroid problems. While it is true that having one autoimmune disease make it more likely that you will have another, it doesn't mean that it will happen.

Your Active B12 level is well above normal. The H&B vitamins you have been taking contain plenty of B12 so there should be no need to take more.

Your Vitamin D is low. You need to take supplements. I'm guessing that the anonymous vitamin that you are taking 40,000 units a week might be Vitamin D. The recommended amount to take is 10 mcg (400 IU) per day. That's 2,800 IU. So you're taking 14 times the recommended amount. nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-...

I would wait and see what your latest tests show. But I doubt you have PA.

Thanks for your reply, yes sorry I forgot to mention it was vitamin d I was taking. You are right the reccomended vit d dose is 400 units a day but that is for a maintenance dose. I have been taking a loading dose that is reccomended to bring vitamin d levels up from deficiency.

Yes I will see what my latest results were, it was just a suggestion from the Thyroid forum that I post on here as they felt my B12 was a bit on the low side. Thanks for your advice.

They always think B12 is 'on the low side' unless it is higher than 90% of the normal population.

I would definitely get your vit d level up. You may need a loading dose first. I was prescribed that. Then vit d maintenance dose thereafter.

This time if year the sun will help too.

Tour b12 level good as mentioned so keep supplementing if you are vegan daily. Keep an eye on your amino i acids too.
