KNEE SURGERY?

High folks, went to see my consultant a few days ago, asked when I was getting my 1st surgery and we discovered I am NOT on the waiting list. This is apparently due to a CLERICAL ERROR with the orthopedic department. My consultant, lovely person has promised me she will ask for a priority appointment. If this makes sense I was 'too angry to be upset' no intention of taking it out on the consultant, not her fault. It took about 24 hours before I got angry then screamed with rage and frustration. I live alone, no family now, advised not to drive until both knees replaced. Buses don't go where I want, taxis expensive. I've had to turn down a request to play Queen Victoria at a charity event, involved with National Heritage and National Trust. I walked alone and with groups, visited places, stuck at home because I can barely walk. Hopefully things will happen soon. I've decided not to make a complaint. Thanks to the Samaritans for listening and my juvenile feline deliquent who sensed something was wrong, nuzzled and stayed with me until I calmed down.

I’m sorry to hear this, but I’m sure the consultant will get you prioritised. As an orthopaedic nurse, I’m confused why you’ve been advised not to drive, unless you have so much pain you would be unable to do an emergency stop. It certainly would seem easier to drive, than walking longer distances and enduring more pain. I’d definitely advise working on strengthening your quads, as that will take some of the stress out of your knee. It will also make recovery afterwards easier, if you’re starting with strong muscles. I’ve never in all my years had a consultant advise not to drive, unless the patient expressed concern at being able to stop safely. Hope it’s not too long till you hear 🤗

Rubbish! That is so unfair and I completely understand your need to scream it out. Cats are surprisingly empathetic aren't they? I still miss mine even after all these years. Let's hope you get your poor knee operated on asap.

So sorry this has happened to you, it seems that your consultant may be able to prioritise you do don't give up hope. You must be bad if they've said no driving so this may increase your chances as well.Let us know what happens next.

That is so frustrating! How long ago did you think you were being put on the surgery waiting list? I would ask that they slot you in where you would have been, had they done the referral properly.

I am currently on a waiting list for an elbow replacement. The NHS app shows an estimate of when it might be. Have you seen that? It switches between May and June but I was horrified to see that on a recent trip to hospital for an unrelated issue, that the brand new 40 bed orthopaedic 'Movement Hub' as they call it was closed! It only opened in November! Could have been because of the junior doctors' striking, heaven knows!
