So I’m on day 11 of champix and this is my second day of not smoking.
This evening I have really been suffering from a sore throat and struggling to swallow 😢 I am also struggling to sleep more than a couple of hours at a time!
Any ideas of what may help?
Thank you xx

First off, I have little experience with Champix however I have seen others talk of side effects to do with sleeping (or not) as well as vivid dreams and so on. Equally, some people do experience problems sleeping when quitting smoking.
Not sure about the sore throat though. It is entirely possible that you have the beginnings of a cold (mine always start with a sore throat). There are a lot of people with colds at the moment, it's the time of year.
Always the way. Dose yourself up. You never know, it may not progress beyond the sore throat. My husband is also on his 3rd cold. It's rubbish. The only silver lining here is that colds last a lot longer in smokers. My husband still smokes and it takes him ages to get over a cold with the coughing remaining long after the other symptoms have subsided.
I do hope you are well enough for your Christmas party.
Welcome kezosb , congratulations and well done on 2 days smoke free!
We have several members here who successfully stopped with the aid of champix, some in their 1, 2 and 3 year milestones. The flu like symptoms and sleep disruption are perfectly normal nicotine withdrawals - see below pinned post worth a read if not already done so.
A spoonful of raw honey (jar honey will work fine too) every morning and evening will help with the sore throat and the cilia (hairs) growing back and also assist with clearing out the lungs - I stopped over 3 years ago and still take the honey.
Wishing you strength for your Christmas party and enjoy it smoke free
6 months after stopping smoking I had some wonderful news, I had to go to see the consultant at the hospital for the results of my blood test the last time I had to see her for the same reason I was a smoker then!
Champix did the trick for me the first few weeks were difficult I had trouble sleeping and had some weird dreams but it got so much easier as time went by well I have not smoked for 10 years and at the age of 71 I am feeling great I have reversed my diabetes and am no longer on meds Well she was all smiles and for the nicest possible reasons, she had no need to see me again! The results of blood tests as a non-smoker were dramatic at the same time as becoming a non smoker I also changed my diet into a healthier one, I lost 5lb in weight not much but considering most people put weight on while stopping the killer habit I am happy with that, but there is more to lose! update In fact since writing this I lost 80lbs
Well here are the numbers, which has created the joy in my family and my Doctor and of course me
When I was a smoker
Cholesterol 11.2
Triglyceride 19.8
The results as a non-smoker
Cholesterol 6.5
Triglyceride 3.2
So as you can see a dramatic difference and very encouraging, so I hope this will help anyone who may be having similar problems, by stopping smoking you not only make a huge difference to your WEALTH you can make a tremendous difference to your HEALTH good luck.
PS if I had not stopped smoking I would now be DEAD
Hello, probably like many here, I had more than one attempt at quitting smoking over the years. I eventually got prescribed Champix and initially I had a tough time with it - particularly with a lack of sleep. I seem to recall it had a weird effect on my tastebuds too.
I don't have fond memories of Champix BUT, more than 9 years later, I still have not had another cigarette since I quit a couple of weeks before Christmas in December 2009. So, it was a bit of short term pain for a lot of long term gain. Hang in there, take it a day at a time. Best of luck, you're doing one of, if not THE BEST, things you can do for yourself physically, mentally and financially!
I hope you're feeling better and have been able to detect whether the throat swallowing is related to a cold ... or a side effect from Champix. When I got my Champix prescription, the pharmacist gave me a sheet of paper that included common side effects and more serious less occurring side effects. Sleep disturbance is under the common list. Swallowing does not appear on either list. But if you can't relate it to a cold ... maybe see your doctor. We are all so unique in how we react to drugs. Congratulations on quitting smoking!!
Thank you! I’m on day 3 now... sleep hasn’t improved but I’m determined to quit FOREVER so sticking with it x

I've been on Champix for a month and a half and my sleep is still goofy too. Sometimes I go to work on 4 broken hours of sleep. I'm trying to ignore it (as miserable as I can sometimes feel) because I prefer the help of Champix and can stop taking it in another month and a half. Good luck and good for you!!
I’m on my 29 th day of not smoking with Champix. I do remember on my first visit to my councilor being asked if I had any problems with swallowing though. To be honest I think it’s possibly a good old cold on the way and that will answer your question but if not do see your GP.
It’s amazing how different medicines reaction with different people as to be perfectly honest apart from the enormous help it is giving me with cravings I’m not aware I’m even taking it. In fact it tends to make me sleepy if anything feeling lucky. Do hope it improves soon but definitely see your GP if not. Good luck!
Hi kezosb ! Congratulations You are in the right place !This community helps all of us to continue our journey to freedom .
I quit with Chantix almost 1 1/2 year ago . And I loved it ! Off course there is a few side effects but when you compare the damage cigarrets causes to your health ,you will realize Chantix is science and technology making it easier for you .and I truly respect those quitting cold turkey ..no matter which way you quit as long as you do it .
Have patiences the first 3 months it’s all very normal and don’t blame it on the medication it’s just part of the detox and readjusting of your body .salt warm water gargles is exellent for sore throat .maintaining a positive mind set is very important .
Keep it up ..It gets so much easier ..very soon you will not even remember about smoking again ..Enjoy freedom
Well done. Second day is a huge step. I did the whole course of Champix (12 weeks) & didn’t have a sore throat although it could just be your body getting rid of all the toxins. I think to sleep well, eat light, not too late, plenty of lemon/cranberry water to detox & just try and relax and feel proud. The vivid dreams were always a problem for me on Champix. Hope they won’t happen to you 😘
