Hi

Have just joined this forum and it seems so inspiring.... Here's hoping :)

Bit about myself... 49yr old female .. Been smoking on & off for about 30 years..average about 7 fags a day. Everyone (even my GP) say that's not a lot but I don't want to smoke ANY a day. I feel that this is a habit ie I only smoke after 2pm and never on a Sunday or if I have a heavy night! My job is very stressful and I smoke more on work days. I have tried patches - worked for 3 weeks then I caved in. I think going cold turkey would be best for me but I need the tools to instrument this.

Some days I really feel I can quit after all I only smoke between 2pm & 9pm but I can,t!!!!

I-would really value your opinions on this as I feel as I am at my wits end.

Apologies for the rant... Also afraid of gaining weight.

Advice welcome x

Hey Katie, welcome!

You're in the right place, this forum is the best tool you'll have in my opinion. I quit CT too (due to illness, not because I'm clever!) and with the amount I smoked I'm proof it can be done. My missus still can't believe it I don't think and it's been 11 months now after 22 years of chain-smoking.

There will always be someone on here who can answer any questions you might have, and rants are always welcome, anything to help a quitter stay quit :)

As for the weight, yes I've gained a bit where maybe I didn't expect to, but like the fags, I can fix that too if I want to, I'd rather be a bit heavier than be smoking; a few pounds doesn't make my chest wheeze, my clothes smell, my kids worry etc etc etc ;)

Newbie

Thank you angry bear.

I have decided to be a non smoker on Saturday 18 may. The reason being weekends are less stressful than weekdays &i still have fags in the house. Now that I have found this forum I will log in daily for support (hopefully)and will take each HOUR at a time. I hope I don't give in!!!! I willget rid of all smoking reminders eg lighters, ashtrays etc. Fed up with being the only smoker on social occasions having to go out for a fag and coming back stinking lol

Philfromwales - how did you quit? What made you do it? How did you cope when you wanted to smoke? What tools did you use? Sorry for all the questions but I need as much inspiration as I can muster:)

Katie

Welcome to the Forum my love. I wish you all the very best as you embark on your quit journey. My advice would be, please please don't look too far ahead, baby steps, just one minute, one hour at a time.

Drink plenty water (grapefruit worked for me), lots of nice walks, (borrow a dog) watch movies, relax, baths and early nights, whatever you enjoy, and read, read the inspiring stories on the Forum, and post too.

Fi x

Hello Kate,

Welcome to the forum! I have only been smoke free for 1 month as of yesterday 15th May, so I'll leave the whole smoking thing to the pros that have been months and years into smoke free :)

I can however give you advice on weight. Expect to gain a little bit if not a lot of weight if you are not into cardio or fat burning excercising. I'll tell you why. Approximately October of 2012 I weighed in at 223LBs. I started a cardio(walking, jogging, and running) and didn't really weigh myself again until mid/end of March 2013, I went from 223lbs to exactly 175lbs. For 18 years I smokes 1 to 1 1/2 pack of smokes a day until April 14, 2013. I jog 5 days a week 4-5 miles. Since End of March I weighed 175. This morning I weighed myself I weighed 171lb, after my evening 5 mile run I weighed 167lbs.

I for the last month have only been eating one meal a day (low calorie meal) and been jogging 4-5 + miles 5 days a week and have been stuck at 166.6 lbs to sometimes high point of 175lbs depending on how much fluid, what I ate and how much I ate or whether its during my two day rest from jogging (sat and sun).

My whole point is even though I have not gained any weigh due to the extensive miles of jogging, I have not really shed a pound in the last 1 1/2 months :( I was steadily losing weight at a good pace when I started my cardio routine(and still smoking), but once I stopped smoking no weight at all have been lost!

I thought by now I would be around 158lbs - 165lb max but that is not the case even with a low daily calorie intake and high fat/calorie burning cardio routine. I do no muscle traning excercises, so I am not gaining any muscle mass other then what is being built(majority in legs) from running.

If I wasn't jogging miles everyday there is no doubt in my mind I would have gain weight and lots of it even if I wasn't really eating!

I eat no sweets, no candy, no process foods, anything from a can, or even box. And most importantly I don't snack at all, ever! ( okay I am lying I eat lots of mangos, and different types of melons throughout the day)

I eat only natural from the ground and fresh lean meats!

I went from drinking 3-5 cups of coffee a day to only 1-2max a day, majority of days I don't even drink any coffee at all!

Smoking is bad news and it messes with every function of the body (respiratory, circulatory, and yes even your metabolism(your concern) )! So please by all means quit on your intended date, stick to this forum! Read, read, read! Post, post, and post! And never smoke again! Ever!

Last thing I want to add is maybe I might be wrong. You might not gain any weight at all. You might even lose weigh from quitting. I have no idea. I am just going by my experience after quitting and from reading post of other peoples experience with weight after they stopped. I find that majority of people gain weight after quitting, and in my case I would think I would to it weren't for jogging on a daily basis and low calorie intake.
