Does anyone here who is a current or ex-smoker use a preventative inhaler for asthma?
I ask as before smoking I never had the need for one, but as I continued to smoke I moved on to Clenil and now Seretide.
(Apologies if this is the wrong area.)

I use one, Seretide. I also have Ventolin to open airways and I think I might have used that one twice in the last 5 months since I stopped, instead of at least once a day when I smoked.
Is there a reason you are asking? Have you quit or smoking on them? Sorry just a bit confused
No, my post was a little convoluted, I've quit smoking and wondered what other asthmatics found as the best preventative.
Originally all I required was Ventolin, as I started and continued to smoke I found I suddenly needed Clenil and when that was no longer effective - Seretide.
It would be nice to only require a rescue inhaler, but I think I'll probably require preventatives indefinitely from now on!
Yes Karri is right about Asthma being due to other causes and not necessarily just smoking. You only have to be in a class room of primary aged children to know that, as at least 1 in 10 children would have inhalers at school, and some years as many as 1 in 6!
Asthma has to do with allergy, and you can develop allergy to things that have not bothered you in the past.
I was diagnosed with Asthma when I was about 40 and not having smoked for quite a few years. I remember saying to the doc,"Well if this is Asthma, I've had it all my life". I have no doubt that smoking has got to make it worse tho.
Karri, I can't remember anyone either who suffered when I was a child. ...But I realise now that I did, so maybe it was not diagnosed as it should have been?
I have quite a few allergies .I've got to be careful with cosmetics, soaps etc for skin reactions, Dust from building work gets me, as does cat hair, guinea pigs and horses and those scent your home things you plug in and pot pourri and some perfumes are a complete nightmare
hi - i was hoping for some advice, my asthma was very well controlled, i was using symbicort twice a day and never used my blue inhaler even with exercise, however i went on holiday and smoked quite alot for only about 5 days - have not smoked since. However after 5 days my asthma got worse, my inhalers didnt make much difference and I have a constant tight chest, I was on 3 courses of pred however this made little difference, I am now on seratide 500 and speriver (sp?) this has been going on for two months and still see little improvement - I am worried my asthma will never return back to normal - anyone else experience anything similar when they started smoking? Am getting worried about it now
hi, thank you for the advice, i have had/am seeing respiratory consultant over the xmas period while I am home, he has suggested to continue with the high dose of seratide and speriva (sp?) and to see how this goes the next few weeks, x rays come back clear and blood tests are normal, will see what he suggests at my next appointment, hopefully all the asthamtics will recover soon!
thank you
