I miss mainly the hand to mouth action and am wondering if anyone has used the inhaler and if so how easy is it to ween yourself off of this...im worried ill get addicted to this lol!

Also the champix...any opinions please?

Well from my own experience i've failed on the tablets, patches, gum and electronic cigarette.

I'm currently on day 11 using the inhalator. Instructions say use between 6 and 12 cartridges a day, i use only 1 a day (and have since day 1) with a view to 0 after 14 days (or maybe half a cartridge ;)).

It's whatever works for you and too be honest i don't think i'd done my homework properly on the previous attempts and definitely now feel i didn't attempt it with the correct mental attitude.

It's a bit like decorating , preparation is half the battle ;) and i know this time it feels sooooooooo different........... in a positive sense :D

Oh by the way Welcome to the forum, you'll get all the advice and support you'll need on here, use it wisely :D

Hi Dolcie and welcome to the forums

I have tried virtually everything from NRT to hypnotism, different things work for different people.

Champix sent me a bit funny, unpleasant side effects for me, however I do know people who quit very successfully using champix.

I don't think you'd be able to use the inhalator with the champix as you should only have nicotine during the first phase of taking the champix and the whole point of the champix is to 'do something' to the nicotine receptors in the brain.

However if you need the hand to mouth then I suppose you could use the inhalator with no cartridge in?

This time I'm using NRT (patches, gum & inhalator) however I'm only using the patches now as don't find I need the others. I'm only planning on using this to 'kick start' me.

What the people of this forum have taught me is that obvioulsy chose whatever method suits you but the key to quitting is education - read about nicotine addiction and quitting, there are lots of useful links in members signatures. Oh and of course group support from a forum like this where we can share experiences, support others and ask for support.

Good luck with your quit

Tinks :)

Thanks for replies and welcome guys...i feel with just a little help i would be able to kick it, i am favouring the inhalator over anything else as it is the habit of hand to mouth when driving, when watching tv, after eating etc and if i had help in those times im sure i could kick it!

My uncle quit successfully using cahmpix but am not sure about the side affects as already suffer ith bad sleep, nightmares etc and really dont want to exagerate this cus i suffer bad enough anyway :(

I have a doc appointment next week so will ask her about it then and hopefully get a prescription!

Hi Dolcie & welcome :D

I have never used Champix so can't offer any help on that. My problem when I quit is the overwhelming urge to have something in my mouth  Because of that I an using the lozenges which suit me perfectly. If I didn't i would be eating 24/7

At the end of the day, do whatever you have to do to quit & stay quit. NRT you can wean yourself off from. I would dearly loved to have done this CT this time but not going to worry about it. So long as I have escapred the smoking prison that's all I care about ;)

Champix worked for me and I would recommend it, because if you can put up with any side effects you get it really does work.

The side effects I got were, weird dreams (everyone gets those though on whatever they do) and....erm.....wind :D

I never felt strange or odd, it never had any effect upon my personality or mental health, I wasn't sick...not once and I didn't get stomache cramps.

I think I got a mild headache on day two, which I may have had anyway.

What did happen was that I quit smoking.

The thing is that you will read horror stories on the net about Champix because people will take time out to write and read a horror story.

Just saying, "It's fine, it worked" is not nearly as entertaining as "Champix is terrible because OMG I nearly died and was convinced that aliens had abducted me when really I was just sat on the floor in my local chinese takeaway trying to smoke a spare rib and there was effluence everywhere.........".*

*When I write that it is a Vikki Pollard type voice I'm hearing :D

Champix worked where many other methods didn't. I'm not trying to encourage you in any way though, I'm just trying to bring balance. Champix worked for me and I coped with the flatulence, can't say the same for my family though :D

Champix worked for me too, though fortunately for me it didn't send my imagination into hyperdrive like my friends' here :p :D

Seriously though, I had the wierd dreams but it seems they are par for the course however you quit. And the way they help you to stop is amazing. I just seemed to cut down smoking naturally in the second week of taking them, with no real effort. The real effort started when I did give up though, as they most certainly aren't magic pills, you have to want to give up and work at it.

I stopped the tablets about the week before xmas, as I kept forgetting to take them, so I haven't completed the course. No ill effects though.

Good luck on however you decide to quit and welcome to the forum :D

Hiya, and welcome.

I absolutely agree with the prevailing 'do whatever works for you' theory on here. At the end of the day 99 % of this is mental battle though, and you do have to prepare yourself and go into it with the right attitude, and then keep your quit alive by constantly reading and educating yourself, reminding yourself why you're doing it by reading other people's stories and motivational articles etc.

I quit CT this time so can't really offer informed comment, but I will say one thing. Breaking the habit is more than just breaking the nicotene addiction. A big part of it is, as you say, hand to mouth habit - the ritual of smoking. Bear in mind at some point presumably you will want to stop using the inhalator and then you will still have that hurdle to cross! Also you will be prolonging the moment when you have to withdraw from nicotene. If you're going to take champix, maybe you should try just that on its own for a little while and see how you go - you never know, you might not need anything else?

As I say though - this is just my two penn'orth. You have to do what works for you. And however you go about it, you're doing a great thing. Be strong, stick around here, and you'll get there!

Hi all just joined, well i decided just before Christmas to give up smoking and i purchased the Allen Carr Easy way book and i felt it was really good and gave up cold turkey for 3 days. All was going well until a family bereavment and i started up again. Well anyway i have been to the nurse today and she as given me a prescription for Champix. I was very excited about these tablets but after reading reviews im a little scared of starting them now. How did people on here who took them feel during the process of giving up?

Hi all thanks for saying hello, well no one said hello but it does not matter! I am now on my 5th day of takin champix and some very weird things have been happening, the first 3 days i felt a little sick after my tablet but since taking the tablet at night i have hardly slept and mad dreams. They are not bad dreams, last night it was shooting stars in the sky but it felt so realistic and the dream i was after was a job i wanted and the boss came up to me and told me in my dream that i had got the job and i start sunday morning. It was so real that i got up this morning and got dressed for it but then my partner asked what i was doing and to tell you truth i did not know! I have missed my night tablet tonight cause im a little scared of takin it and im just wondering what i will be like when i start on the full strength ones this week?

Hope you guys have something to post.

Many thanks Chris.

Hi Chris & welcome :D

I can add anything about taking champix as that is about the only NRT have not tried but many here have so will no doubt be a long in abit to offer advise. Most of us suffer from the incrediblt real dreams at some point so you are not alone on that front!

Good luck with your quit. Read, read & read & post as often as you can. It all helps ;)

Hi Chris

I have just started my 3rd week on Champix (no cigs for over a week now!). Have had a couple of weird dreams (work related too!), very vivid but not disturbing!! I still feel a bit nauseous after my morning tablet (on 1mg twice a day) but find it goes if I eat something just after the tablet - I normally grab a banana or a yoghurt and that seems to do the trick. Find I am sleeping really well now, I think it may be because the last ciggie I used to have before bed used to wake me up. Keep up the good work - my boss is so impressed that I'm not smoking any more that he's gone to his GP tonight to get Champix too:)

I'm on day 6 of the Champix on 0.5mg day & night. I tend to take mine while eating a Yoghurt and that stops me feeling sick.

Last night I had the weirdest series of dreams ever, not bad dreams just weird. I also woke up lots so today I feel very tired from interupted sleep.

There are many side effects to any type of drug you take, you just have to take the good with the not so good as you know it is worth it for the end result :)

Heya, well im still on the tablets but still smoking, I start the second week of tablets tomorrow which are double in stength and my quit day is Sunday 30th Jan. I find myself only smoking a few times a day now, used to be 20 a day and only smoking half and putting the other half in the ashtray. Will report back at weekend.

Hi Chris

I quit using Champix. I smoked 20-30 a day and never thought I'd be rid of the habit. But that's just what it is.... a habit. Champix blocks the nicotine receptors in your brain (according to my quit nurse), and by the time you take the full strength tablets, the urge to smoke is minimal. Don't carry on smoking til your quit day if you don't want to...you are allowed to give up before then if you want :D

Champix does lessen your need to smoke, but it isn't a miracle cure. You still have to want to give up. As others have said...read,read,read....information and willpower are the keys to quitting.

All the best on your journey to becoming smoke free....I would say good luck, but luck has nothing to do with it x
