Smoked after a few wines

I have had a couple of blips in my 6 week quit and always after a drink.I have had 5 fags on 2 seperate occasions while drunk,so drunk I didn't care like someone else has said on here.I have not started again and regreted it but am not going back to day 1.Am not looking for any easy way out here but a friend who has never smoked in day to day life just has a fag or 2 when she has a drink and never when she is soba,is the evil nicotine telling me I can get away with this too?.Think I know its not going to work as sooner or later you will start smoking again, but am really struggling with having a drink and not smoking.Ok some may say, well just don't drink, but you have got to have some life!,have put on a stone since quitting ( even though am really trying to watch my weight gain and I do run often ).Its so hard putting weight on,not drinking and not smoking. Why can't tasty food, fags and booze be good for you?!life would be so easy! x

  • Drinking alcohol is a huge NO NO if your trying to loose weight.

Anyways, in my opinion if you are going to give up smoking you have to concentrate on JUST that, nothing else.

Ive put on over 2lb stopping smoking in just over a week but which would you prefer, a bit of a belly for the time being or long term lung cancer?

I dont mean to be a snappy cow but you really cant just have the one when your out drinking. It just wont happen. It WILL lead to more when sober.

    Your friend sounds like a social smoker which is easy for someone to do who has never been a full time smoker but you have, so your choices are;

    1. Stop smoking for good, using the help of this forum, lots & lots of understanding, caring and supportive people.

    OR

    2. Carry on puffing as normal.

Lots of people are here to help and support but it just makes me angry when people think they can have "just the one".

Good luck on deciding what path your going to choose.

  • I know you are right LittleVix,was just having a little moan.Am sticking at it, and maybe its time to leave the drink for a few weeks.I know what you are saying, need a kick up the arse thats all, will get there x

I know its hard sweetie, im only on day 6 and ive had a nightmare of a few days but you just gotta keep thinking of all the positives and kick the nicodemon out!!

    Keep positive & smile.

I find sucking drumsticks (the sweet now!! ) helps the craving and also drinking berocca in the morning!

  • Hi mumi,

I think one of the current theories about smoking is that some people have more of a nicotine 'friendly' system than others, which is why people like your friend can occasionally smoke (her system probably isn't nicotine friendly), whereas people like us react to it more. I know that probably feels like it isn't fair, but it might help you to understand why the 'odd' one isn't a good idea for ex-smokers.

Incidentally, they're trying to create a 'vaccine' that would make people non-reactive to smoking. A bit like permanent champix I guess.

  • I think a lot of social smokers are like how Allen Carr describes them.....a lot of my friends were "social smokers"....Apparently only smoking down the pub etc...thing is, as soon as a drink was in their hands they were quickly cadging fags off me. They didn't even wait until they were merry and their guard was down...they just came cadging as soon as. Also, quite a few of them admitted to me on a later date that they smoked one either in the car on the way home from work or a few before bed "to relax". I think because they didn't want to admit to themselves that they were indeed a dirty fag smoker they restricted themselves so much so they couldn't be termed as such. However, put them in a situation were it was seen as more acceptable to smoke they soon clamoured around us smokers for a fag.....used to piss me off man!!!!

  • Honestly I thought my friends were only social smokers but they did fess up to me later they'd sneak a few at home too. You're not with your friends 24/7 who's to know they're telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth....We all white lie and I s'pose this is exactly what it is ......a white little lie, but at the end of the day they're addicted to nicotine like us.

Are they really? That sounds amazing:) Ive stopped for around 4 months now, thankfully have stopped counting the days / weeks / hours lol but id still take a vaccine for it if it made me completely forget about smoking!

Keep it up mum. You know yourself you cant have just one or you wouldnt even have written this! I have more or less drank from the beginning as i thought i may as well get over the hurdle quickly. I drank at home after around 12 days i think?! and had no access to cigarettes so that helped, then after a another week or so i had another drink at a friends house then i started going to pubs around the 4th or 5th time. Ive never smoked when ive been drinking and i actually dont even miss it now. Although i have to admit, i seem to get wasted a lot quicker lol. Must have been all those smoke breaks taking me away from the alcohol before...
