Smoking after a meal.

Just been out for a steak which I might add was very nice.

As you leave the pub I was in you go out into an area which is full of smokers and have to walk through them to get to the car park. I didn't really want to go that way but had no choice and found myself holding my breath as I walked through them.

Hi AA

Yes - the one after a meal is the one I miss most - other than the first one in the morning - and the one with a cup of tea - and the one when I'm on the phone etc. etc.

But I've nearly managed 10 days without a puff. And most of the time I'm coping OK.

I was born and grew up in Penn - not far from Stourbridge.

We West Midlanders can beat the weed.

Jenny that is exactly what came into my head at the time. Its ****** freezing out there and they are all huddled in the smoking area catching there deaths.

The only reason I held my breath was that since my last drag last Wednesday I have not smelt smoke at all.

Penn is just up the road from me as you say so you probably know the pub I was at in the merry hill. Gave up drinking at new year. Smoking last week and im frequenting public houses with smoking areas. Don't make things easy for myself do I :D

Hi again aa

Yes - I lived on Warstones Road - not far from the Merry Hill.

I had my first fag as a nipper not far from there in Bantocks Park. Never realised that would be the start of a 50+ years habit.

But- all behind me now.

Not smoking is very gradually becoming my norm.

Interestingly I was really shocked how quickly I got over the need for the one in my dressing gown on the balcony the minute I woke up, and the one after a meal. It was a nice big surprise. Now I never think about that first one of the day which I am delighted about

Agreed. I'm actually amazed how quickly I've got used to not lighting up as soon as I wake. I'm not experiencing strong physical cravings - but I am finding it quite difficult to just get out of the habit of smoking. Does that make any sense ?

I've got to introduce myself to the new non-smoking me.

I saw someone calling them pangs. Is that what you mean. I knew what there person was talking about. I get those pangs but they go quickly :)

Pangs. That's a brilliant word for them. Its not that your dying to light up its just that there is always something there ,nagging away at you. Its the norm and breaking that cycle/habbit is the key I think.

I've just looked up the definition of pang. My dictionary says "sudden sharp mental pain".

I agree that it's mental rather than physical - but my pang is more a dull nagging ache rather than a sharp pain.

What's your pang like ?

I would say mine is the same at the moment.

As soon as Iv eaten I brush my teeth or chew gum...straight away.

It's one of the first habits I had to get into when I quit.:)and it seems to be working:)

The ciggie after a meal was the one which took by far and away the longest to dissipate for me. It was always my trigger.

I find it's stressful situations that do it for me. Even now, months down the road, I struggle to find a way to deal with massively stressful situations. I can talk myself around when it's everyday problems, but when they are all mounting up faster than I can deal with them.....that's when I struggle.

It's definitely a mental thing......my mind wants a fag but my body knows what it would be like :o. If I did have one, my head would feel like it would explode, I would feel as if I was about to pass out due to lack of oxygen, there would be that burning smell up my nose......yuk yuk yuk. But, regrettably my head still tells me that a fag is what I need. :( That's what 40+ years of the damned things does.

Most of the time it's OK though....and anyway, I couldn't afford the blasted things now.......have you seen the price of 'em.:eek:

For me, it's the reward fag (you know- the one you have when you've finished the housework/gardening/difficult task at work/shopping, etc) that's taken the longest to get the better of and I still have the odd moment when I think it's time to roll a tab and then remember I don't do that sort of thing any longer. However, thankfully those moments are few and far between now and are much less 'twitchy' than they used to be.

Do you know, Val, I've not dared get close enough to the tobacco counter at the supermarket to check what price my old hand-rolling tobacco is now. :o Bet it's gone up though.

SO glad I don't have to do any of that any more. :D
