just go cold turkey - it worked for me.

I stopped 30 months ago. I purchased a pack of rolling tobacco that had been tampered with from Tesco and never smoked again. It was hell for about 4 weeks, the temptation to smoke was horrendous but I stuck it out and beat it. I was climbing the walls, dizzy, no motivation, grumpy, withdrawal symptoms lol, but after about 4 weeks it does get easier I promise.

The pack I got from Tesco looked perfect from the outside, but inside the pack it was just rolled up shreded newspaper so it weighed and felt right. I was so amazed and angry that something like that could happen that I vowed never to smoke ever again and it worked.

Looking back it's sad but I even raided the bin looking for old dog ends, yep been there done it and I know what your going through BUT...

You don't need any of these anti smoking devices, patches or pills to stop. You will only stop if you WANT TO stop in your own mind, it's like a switch. so flip that switch, put your mind in gear and stop.

In my opinion, using a patch or something PRIMES you with the EXCUSE to fail on day 1. In you own mind you will say oh well, its not my fault, it's the patch that failed. meh I'll try again later. You want to stop but you're also giving yourself the psychological exit route to back out when you cant cope anymore, thats my opinion anyway, but good luck to you all. :)

Ah, the old argument. I and many are patches quitters and I am nearly 3 years into a quit.its not how you start, its how you educate yourself on how to stay quit and how you mentally realign yourself to understand why you don't need to smoke. You can just as easily fail cold turkey as any other way. Education, support and a positive attitude and this forum is the way.

One thing that never worked is telling somebody what to do,when to do it and how to do it.

This is why I like this forum, we all support each other no matter what.

I totally agree dorset. People nagging me to stop smoking set my quit back for several years. I quit when I was ready, for my reasons, and in my way too, and so far its going fine:p

Agreed, to each their own method of quitting. It's the end result that counts, not how you got there.

same here, as soon as I get told what to do, or people nagging me , or people telling me what I'm doing wrong etc. I feel like getting myself a packet.

Won't happen as long I got this forum :D

Hi dorset, I so know what you mean. I remember one time when I was cutting down my smoking and doing really well, I had a phone call from my mum and by the time she had finished with me I was so angry I smoked all the cigs I was saving for the rest of the day and then bought some more:rolleyes: My mum and her boyfriend meant well, but they used to start harping on about smoking in times when I wasn't even thinking about it which did not help. So this quit is for me, I have my reasons, suspected circulatory problems which is scary. I am glad my mum is happy that I am not smoking now and I know she cares about me and loves me, and I want to make her happy. But this quit is to save my life. Nagging someone to stop smoking does not help.

Well done on your 30 months, NubBuster. Getting the first year in is an outstanding achievement and each year thereafter gets us further and further away from the days when we danced to Nicotine's tune....enslaved, but no more

Literally millions of folk have stopped smoking and some would've done it in isolation using whatever methods available and useful to the individual. It's no surprise that you have come onto the Forum feeling absolutely elated by your success and wishing to share that magical key with others in an effort to help others from enslavement to nicotine.

Others, whether long-term quitters or even those without much quit time under their belts, also visit the Forum for the same reason as you seeking to share that wisdom. Most disappear quite quickly and others stop for a while longer and noticably change their position embracing that possibly 'all roads can lead to Rome'.

As others have posted already that it doesn't matter which method one starts their quit off, all that matters is that one manages to successfully stop. We long term quitters can support newbies by pointing towards the direction of reading and education. Also very importantly by supporting each other and giving a listening ear when needed.

Hopefully you'll stick around a bit and help to support others with the experience you've gained recognising that there are limitations to the amount we can force our thoughts on others.

Keep on keepin' on,

Cav

Another one for using the method that suits your own needs. You can't teach or tell people how to quit smoking, you can only provide experiences and support. The rest is a very personal and individual journey.

Just my 2 pence worth.
