I went 4 days without a smoke...

Hi everyone!

After contiuned attempts (9th time maybe?) I quit and managed 4 days without a cig.

Big shame as on the 3rd day I could already feel the benefit. I could breathe deeper and of the 4th day I developed a cough (part of the healing process I hear?). I also had an improved sense of smell, amzaing to think all this just after 4 days.

On wednesday, I got bogged down at work fell a bit ill and couldnt help crave for a smoke. I only seem to smoke at work and when I have a few drinks, I dont smoke at home as the Misses finds it disgusting (which is one reason I want to quit, and of course I dont want to die).

I dont tend to smoke weekends (unless I'm drunk), but I was wondering, does anyone have any tips in resisting the urge to smoke at work during the week? My office is full of smokers and its hard. I'm on patches that seem to work to an extent but fall short of the mark! Maybe this forum will help I dunno.

Cheers!

Hi, well done on your quit so far, brilliant stuff :D

I have used patches in the past & found they made my quit so much easier but used the lozenges as well which helped when I was having a grrrrrrrr moment!!

I actually found work easier as we are not supposed to have fag breaks so smoked before, lunchtime & after. The lozenges got me through the day.

Its hard I imagine if everyone keeps shuffling off for one & you can't go but just hang on to the fact that your health has already improved & will continue to do so day by day. Visualise those lungs of your being full of clear, lovely oxygen not a swirling cloud of smoke & chemicals ok?

I am sure the cold, throat thing will clear soon, not unusual when you quit.

Hi Dan

congrats on the quit good effort mate, Yep sore throat, cough, runny nose all symptons of the first few days of your quit, keep drinking plenty of water and keep yourself busy at work when your mates go for a cig ... thing to do also if you use to go for a smoke with them ...go after them but just a little walk that way you are not breaking a habit and you wont feel like something is missing as that is another classic symptom you feel lost!! ...it's only a habit just break the smoke habit dont break getting up from your desk for a break otherwise you will just sit there getting stressed and fed up with yourself .......... good luck mate bit of determination and you will crack this no problem.

Cheers guys!

I'm slightly worried about this cough. It's all throat and no chest, very dry and produces only small amounts of sputum. Is this normal?

The cough has made my throat terrible, tickly and I seem to be coughing very regulary, especially when I lie down. loosing sleep over it.

Hi Dan

From reading your thread you sound as if you really want to quit, but seems you are finding it difficult to stay focused, so I would say this site is the best place you could have landed, this forum will help to give you added reasons to stay quit and also somewhere to rant and rave and bear your soul which I am sure you will do in the next few weeks or so but remember we are all trying to do the same thing and will totally understand.

If you checkout my sig you will see a really good link about water, there are loads out there but this one is fairly straight forward and gives a good insight in to why we need to drink plenty when quitting.

I hope this forum will keep you on track and make your wife a happy lady, after a few days your sense of smell will improve and you will see why she hates the smell etc, you will also be well surprised by some of the benefits of quitting.

Speak often and let us know how you are doing, if you don’t tell us we cant help you, and I promise we will not get fed up with you x

Sorry meant to say that coughs are so normal after quit, mine was tiresome with little sputem but cleared eventualy, if it persists see the chemist and get some cough med, dont buy without discussing as you could buy the wrong type.

I smoked a fair bit today, having few drinks with a few mates after work. :( its made my throat even worse. How stupid of me! I seem to go 1-3 days without a fag quite easily then I get a strong craving and relapse...

I got talking to this lass at the pub who saw me go for a fag and urged me to stop. She lost her dad to smoking. He had his legs amputated at 50 due to lack of blood circulation and died shortly after. What the ****, i seriously need to kick this habit.

I've only smoked for 3 years. One of many bad habits I picked up at university :'(

Oh dear Dan, it is so sad that you have slipped back after only 3 days but everywhere you go there will be someone willing to share a smoke with you, but the scariest thing is there will be loads of people out there whose loved ones died from smoking related diseases me included.

If that’s not enough to make you stop and think and then decide to quit for life then I don’t think anything will, you need to be more in tune with your decision to quit and to maybe lay off the drink for a few days as a lot of us have had to do, if you read the threads you will see there are a few that drink has been responsible for breaking their quits.

Maybe once past four days you might be stronger, we all have a nemesis and 3 days is maybe yours, use the forum it’s a great quit sustainer, but you are the only one that can make this quit work, I’m sorry if I seem harsh but quitting is NOT easy but I promise it is and this is proven the best thing you can do for your health and to give you a good quality of life.

I know I know. I seem to be gradually weaning myself off them. I used to smoke 10 a day 50 week and I've managed to cut it down to around 15 a week over the past few months. If anything I can take that as some kind of positive progress.

I'm home now, can't stand the thought of another cig...till Monday probably argh...

Really gonna try go the whole week, i feel the urge to smoke is starting waiver as the weeks go by...

Hi Dan

Don't know what else to add really - you want to quit, you know why you want to quit problem is getting you quit:) I so understand with the work thing - first sign of pressure and stress and I'd be off out for a ciggie. For the first week of my quit I made a point of going out and just walking for a bit then heading back when I'd calmed down - for a few days I felt that I was missing out by not going out for my ciggie until I realised that I was just missing going out.

Try making a list of why you want to quit and have a copy stuck everywhere you can see it. Keep posting even if it's just for a rant as we all know how you're feeling. Stay strong as you can do this :)
