I dont like posting negative posts and have tried really hard to be positive on here but I,m having a bit of a tough time this week.
Is anyone else on here having problems with their gums....mine started playing up a couple of weeks ago and I had a routine dental check. The dentist, who was delighted I had stopped smoking, said that my gums were looking a bit tender but this was normal after stopping smoking. He would clean into the gum line to make sure that they would have the best chance of becoming healthy again.
This consisted of scaling my teeth 3mm into the gum line....sorry if anyone is squeamish...it hurt like HELL. Since then, for 1 complete week, my gums are even worse...cant eat (ok that is good for the waistline) and am using so much mouth wash I would never pass a breathaliser test... Brushing my teeth, very gently, is like open heart surgery, not to mention my mouth permenantly tastes of dog poo.
Went back today and he says my gums are doing really well and he understands they are really painful....the hell he does....take painkillers 4 times a day for a week and I should feel better....
Sorry for the moan. Dont think I expected any negative side effects.
Still chocolate melts in the mouth and the alcohol in the wine is bound to have anti bacterial properties.

There are a few posts I've come across (by BibleBlack I think) that mentions extreme sensitivity and gum problems.
Yours do sound extremely uncomfortable and it seems your dentist wasn't really able to offer much in the way of short term hope.
I'm currently having some major dental work done (personal choice not an absolute must) and in the last month have had 3 deep clean sessions with the hygienist to keep on top of things but I'm not having any after pain or sensitivity so far. My gums are changing back to a pale healthy pink and reducing a little and therefore exposing a little more of the tooth than I've seen in heck knows how many years.
I've been informed to expect some sensitivity and just use the appropriate toothpaste. But to be told to take pain relief 4 times a day for a week doesn't sound great but your deep clean was deep by the sound of things - maybe that amount of pain relief (and the wine and the chocs) will help you over the worst.
Saying that though........... my hygienist did say to me "If your going to be a pig with chocolate be a real pig and eat it all in one go. Don't pick at it over the day (HA, as if!!!) as the sugar will hang around longer".
I hate to say it, but maybe chocolate and (Oh I'm really hating saying this, honestly) it's sugar contents lingering around sensitive gums isn't the best thing for you at the moment.
*Pol goes away to duck the flying pans and lids being chucked her way for suggesting such a thing*
Oh dear. really sorry about that. Only difference I've noticed is that when I brush my teeth my gums bleed a bit more than they did when I was smoking. I've also read something about gums and smoking, but don't know enough about it. I'm sure you shouldn't be in this much pain though. you're being very brave. Hope it's a bit better tomorrow. Only thing I can think of is the good old-fashioned clove oil. It doesn't cure it but rubbing it on the area that's painful does relieve it. Let us know how you get on
My dentist is very good to be fair and he did say that my gums were regenerating very quickly which whilst being a good thing long term was contributing to the discomfort.
Pol, promise most of the talk of choc is just that. Its not sensitivity that I have it is just very swollen gums. My teeth are great....
My teeth are very sensitive at the moment but I put that down to over use of sweets and chewing gum. However frankly there is nothing I can do as that's what is helping me.
Sorry to hear about your problems Lorna but I think this is another short term quitting affect (what else can go wrong with us). I've got an appointment with the hygienist a week on Monday so I will see what she says.
Hey it's not a negative post, it just makes the rest of us know we are not odd because we thought we were the only ones with this problem.
Wine is good for he teeth I've heard! Oh and so is Ben & Jerry's.
Thanks Jim, this was a great help...good to know I am not going mad. Makes sense out of what I was told today as well....I will keep taking the tablets as they say.

Hi Lorna....I too had big time trouble with my gums.......I have been given up 3 months and they are actually just starting to settle now:(......we did so much damage while smoking it takes ages to heal
I'm sorry your mouth is so painful at the moment but just think of the lovely white teeth and healthy gums you're going to end up with
I didn't get the painful teeth/gums but I did have problems as I have dentures and as my gums shrunk after I stopped smoking my teeth had to be relined twice to make them fit Dentist said it was because I'd quit and was delighted about that so it didn't cost me anything
