Hi sonic

Because we smoked our gums were always inflamed not so much as we notice no pain etc ...now we have given up the swelling is easing so therefore gums will be a lot tender and because you brush as normal they are bleeding ,,,, now i am not 100% about this but i am sure your dentist will confirm it ..... well done on Day 11 by the way sonic keep it going and hang in there whilst you get an appointment with dentist have you tried having a chat with the chemist? good luck :)

Hey, and well done for 11 days down...

mouth issues are really common after stopping....one of the things they dont tell you about.

Best advice go and see a dentist, issues can range from slight soreness and bleeding ums to full scale absesses etc....but let them check you over and take it from there.

Good luck

xx

I don't seem to have sore gums but boy is my tongue sore still don't stop me yapping or eating though. Seems to be patches and ulcerated went to the chemist who said he thinks it is caused by stress to your body trying to work out what the hell is going on. Has said if its not any better in a couple of days to visit my GP.

My dentist told me to watch out for bleeding gums so it seem to be part of the process of healing through giving up.

Thankfully don't remember getting that. Thought I would, as I brush my teeth so hard (probably to try and get rid of the nicotine stains) but that might be due to changing the toothbrush from firm to medium.

Hi

Thanks for all you're advice. I got an emergency (I know it seems dramatic but it hurts) appointment to see my dentist today and you are all right. Its part of the 'healing' process. Basically he told me to and I quote 'grit my teeth'- that's easy for him to say- and the pain should ease within a week (a week!!!!!!). I felt like telling him to put his bollox in a vice. However it was reassuring to know that its all perfectly normal and it will go away. One thing he did say if anyone else is suffering is to do a warm salt water rinse, which I have tried, and it does help......along with neouphen and vodka (I added that bit!), cheers x

I hope the next week goes quickly for you and the pain resides and gums settle.

I didn't have the problems you've described but I did change brush to an electric one. Less aggressive on the gums but just as effective with cleaning. I regularly use floss and the little brush things and for a while swilled each night for a while with Corsodyl. I'd recommend the mouth wash, it will help.

smoking initiates gums diseases. These gum diseases manifest swelling on the gum areas that finally lessen the strong teeth formation. It is in this stage that loss of tooth occurs. so it will be tough to cope up with the gums problem.

so just take care of your teeth and gum.

How Should I Care for My Teeth and Gums?

There are five basic steps to caring for teeth and gums:

1. Brushing

2. Flossing

3. Eating right

4. Visiting the dentist

5. Rinsing

I'm so glad I've read this. I'm on day 10 and have read lots of the symptoms to expect which I'm fine about (not really but accepting it's better than carrying on smoking!) but gums being sore I've only just seen here and it's certainly put my mind at rest. I realise my body is adjusting and was expecting other stuff (constipation is another surprise one so looking to read more about that unpleasant side-affect and wondering when it will go!) but the gums? hmmmm - hoping it's short term.
