I've started a Reasons for quitting poll and hopefully people from the different forums will participate to see what are the top few reasons for quitting. If there are any other options that should be on the poll, let me know and i'll add them on.

I hated being addicted. I wanted to free myself from the dependence.

Sorted - health being the main one.

Ditto John - every cold turned into a chest infection, and lasted for months :(

(If a horse had a cough like I had, it would be put down :()

5 beautiful grandchildren - what example was I showing to them? :(

Feel soooooooo much better now (3 months tomorrow folks!:D)

I was sick of smoking. Sick of 'wanting' to smoke, dreading nights out when I couldn't smoke etc etc etc........... all that made better by the fact that i probably wouldn't live very long anyway

I knew if i put my mind to it i could end that torture and I did. It wasn't the money because I borrowed money many times to enable me to continue to smoke. Seriously my bills were high and wages low and I would dip into next months money for stinky cigarettes.

As for the health, my family has appalling early death rates on either side I have no doubt I would be dead before 50 if i kept smoking like i did.

*shudders*

Like me you probably spent it instead of putting it in the 'jar'. Wish I had, i'd be loaded :(

Now that's what I call a reason to stop!

Sux that you have to pay for your tests. At least we get all that stuff 'free' (allegedly) and even though we have to beg for it

Well if you have alot of money here you get good healthcare.

I dont so you have to pay as much as you can before quality

treatment.....Its a big rippoff............Anyway I feel pretty good

about it now, just wish all the cr8p on here would stop....

Never thought I'd say this but I am actually feeling grateful for the NHS

Hey, Dubbs, ignore the crap posters. They may try to goad you but don't rise to the bait! Stay calm, serene even (!) and do as I do.....smile sweetly and walk away ;)

I have been quit for 2 Months, 4 Weeks, 9 hours, 42 minutes and 2 seconds (89 days). I have saved £447.01 by not smoking 1,788 cigarettes. I have saved 6 Days and 5 hours of my life. My Quit Date: 17/02/2008 22:00

One of my main reasons was when my son who's nearlly 4 asked if he could have one of my lollipops when he saw me smoking. I didn't know how to explain why he couldn't have one, and when I said they where grown up lollipops it sounded a bit pathetic.

So this is for my two special sons who have given me the willpower to throw everything i had that was smoking related into the bin never to be seen again.

With 2 reasons like that Andy, you will definitely succeed! :)

I remember my granddaughter about the same age, turnng away from me as I tried to give her a kiss, cos I was "Smelleeeeee!

Pathetic eh?

your right Barbara, but at times like today when they have had me up for 2 hours already it gets hard.

Only joking i can't wait for school sports day, at least i'll be able to run 50 yards without coughing a lung up.

lol Andy - I know what you mean - I have 4 grandchildren staying with us this weekend.

I love them soooooooo much, but heave a sigh of relief when I drop them back off

with their parents tomorrow!

I can well believe your be glad to hand them back Barbara. My two can make the devil look like an angel at times lol, but they can also wrap me round their little fingers even at their age.

I think i'm just a soft touch when it comes to the pair of them, i bet you are with your grandkids.

So far, the poll seems to suggest that family isnt as big a reason as people say. It seems to be money and society concerns (bans, stigma, campaigns). Andy i suppose you're luckier to find a reason to quit so close to home

nsd_user663_3226 profile image

So it seems that the top 2 reasons for quitting are:

1. Recent health problems

2. Society (bans, stigma, campaigns)

my reason:

Tired of having asthmatic bronchitus 3-4 times a year. Last doc visit told me he thought I have early COPD! That was enough for me to stop!!! I am happy to say I have not had any sickness since October 07:D I even survived allergy season without a single pill~all i can say it was so worth the angony in the beginning! Keep strong everyone:cool:

It hit home when my 6 year old son came home from school and asked me why i was killing myself he had the smoking people at his school telling them the dangers of smoking:eek:
