im 35 years old and gave up smoking 1 year ago aged 34.smoked for 19 years.i gave up in 2 minutes.had my last fag.threw every known ashtray out and all my tobacco and never looked back once.
the reason?on 12 april 2006 i got a phone call from my dad a smoker of 50 years(aged 63)he smoked fags then a pipe.son he told me i have lung cancer.it is only small in one lung and there going to shrink it before they take it out.at that point when the phone went down i went into shock.stopped smoking instantly.and wept.ok pull yourself together i thought theyll fix him.bear in mind he had nothing wrong with the rest of him at all.he was a very fit man.he had chemotherapy 6 times and the tumour started to shrink.it was the happiest day of my life.then in february this year he started to lose weight.it had spread to his bones.he came up to see me 400 miles away and hugged me and told me he was ok.we played golf and he even got a hole in one on the pitch and putt.in may he was rushed to hospital in fact 4 days ago.he died within a day of massive infection brought on by chemo.his whole lung was covered in cancer.yet strangely enuf he had told us all along they were gona take it out.that it was only small.but he lied.he lied to protect us.to stop us worrying.i cried for 2 days and then have got stronger.but please please listen to me.that man was playing football with me 14 months ago.hes now dead.my dad.20 years to early.im only 35 for gods sake.i want every one of you on this page to remember something.thgis is no joke dont ever think this wont happen to you.because it will and it does.
it causes ure body so much pain from cancer ure better off dead anyway.
give up now guys.not for me.not for my dad.who ill never see again.but for your lives.your worth so much more.all of you.

Thankyou for sharing your story Mark. You have made me realise that it is the ones we leave behind that suffer dreadfully. You have hit a raw nerve in me that I never knew existed. I have a 13yr old daughter and to leave her without a Mum at 35 is such a powerful image. I WILL give this habit the boot.
Your father was a remarkable man! to be so bold and hold on to everything to the end, not submitt to a bedridden 'woe is me' scenario of which I am sure I would!
His kindness and strength is obviously a trait he passed on to you, for you to come and tell us your story.To give us a thought, a group of struggling quitters you do not know from Adam! just days after your fathers death is truly amazing and incredibly thoughtful.
I am positive that your story has touched and changed the outcome for at least 1 life in this forum, your post may well of saved a life, if not lives. Your father didn't die in vain x x
