Hi Sarah,

I'd suggest that both you and he have a good read around together of the NHS Choices live well lose weight pages, including the free 12 week plan.

nhs.uk/LiveWell/loseweight/...

5 stone (70lbs / nearly 32 kgs) is a significant amount of weight and at the recommended rate of weight loss of 1 to 2lbs a week - you're talking a long term commitment to changing the eating and exercise/activity habits, probably about 8 or 9 months or so.

You will probably also find the pages about healthy eating helpful too.

nhs.uk/LiveWell/healthy-eat...

In my view, the key to it is identifying and putting your hand up the 'bad' eating and exercise/activity habits, i,e, the ones that made your partner overweight in the first place, and setting about changing those for 'good' and healthy ones.

I would suggest, for a male, a daily calorie intake of about 1900 kcal a day in order to achieve the appropriate rate of weight loss.

Despite all the nonsense you see in adverts - "you can lose 45 stone in 0.7 seconds" and the like - fast weight loss is not a good idea. For one reason, those who lose weight fast tend to regain it in the following months and years and a more prolonged period allows your body to adapt to the changes and for the new 'good' habits to become more firmly rooted.

Good luck with your partner's weight loss journey.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.I have had a look at the things you have suggested and will be implementing the plan ASAP. I'm thinking if we aim for a stone at a time, that should be realistic enough!

Also note that even 5% weight loss shows significant health benefits. So, even if you don't reach your ideal weight, it is still a success if you have lost some of it. cdc.gov/healthyweight/losin... (Section: "Even modest weightloss ... ").
