Hi, Autumnbreeze, I am so sorry for your loss. I have had a number of miscarriages and they can be really hard even if they are early in pregnancy. My heart goes out to you.

I did have a miscarriage while I was taking sertraline. I looked into it a lot and talked with a number of different physicians. The studies that are well done have shown that sertraline is safe to take during pregnancy and does not cause miscarriage. It does not harm the baby in any way. They have followed the development of babies whose moms took sertraline while they were pregnant with them. The babies have developed normally, without any evidence of adverse effects caused by the sertraline.

I know that this won’t help right now, but maybe at some point it will help to know that about 50% of pregnancies and in miscarriage and that that just happens without any reason we can understand. And having a miscarriage does not predict future miscarriages or inability to carry a pregnancy to term. I had two miscarriages, then had twins, then had another miscarriage, and then had a son. I was sure that there was something wrong with me until the obstetrician told me about how many miscarriages there are. Many of them are not recognized because they happen so early in pregnancy. But many do occur after the person knows that she is pregnant. I lost a baby at 14 1/2 weeks. That was really really hard, but I know that The pain is just as great when one loses a baby early in pregnancy.

I think that all moms who have a miscarriage worry about what might’ve caused it, but when you have OCD , I think the worries are much more pervasive and intense. I had the very strong feeling that I must’ve have caused the miscarriage somehow. It was my fault. I kept reviewing what I had done and hadn’t done that could have caused me to lose the baby. I worried that I was being punished for the “bad” things that I had done in the past, even things I had done when I was a young child, I worried that I was not worthy of having a child.

I know a lot of people who have had the same worries, and I just wanted to let you know about them. Because it helped me a little bit to know that other people were having the same worries and thoughts, but, as has been usual for me, I felt that of course they had not done anything to precipitate the miscarriage or be punished, but that I had somehow.

I am hoping that maybe it will help you a little, too, to know that a lot of experience the same thing after having a miscarriage

And I want to say again, just in case you are worried about it, taking the sertraline did not cause you to have a miscarriage. I work in a medical field and have had a fair amount of experience with which medications can be used safely during pregnancy and which cannot. Sertraline is one of the medication that is safe to take during pregnancy and there is no evidence that it causes miscarriages.

I am thinking of you and sending many heart wishes. You are not alone, even though it can feel that way off and on.

I apologize for being so in articulate. If I allow myself to give into it I will rewrite this 100 times and not be satisfied with any of them. One of the rules I have to follow is not to rewrite anything no matter how bad it is. I apologize. I trying not to give in to the OCD…Even though part of me wishes I could because it seems like it would be easier even though it really is not.

Please take good care. Thinking of you !
