Hi Jane-r Hydroxycarbamide is an oral chemotherapy or anti-cancer agent, so the answer for any insurance is yes, you are taking oral chemotherapy medication. Maz

Hi just phoned my insurer Staysure who covered me before with ET and now they won’t cover me because I said I was on chemotherapy. I know others on this site who are with them . Do you know how they get travel insurance ?

Say I can but won’t be covered for ET which is really main thing that needs covering. I am really confused now

That’s odd!

I have used Staysure many times since my diagnosis. I can’t remember if I was asked about chemotherapy though. If I had have been asked I would have offered up the information, as it would be stupid not to. I’m really annoyed I can’t remember.

Interesting to hear what others have to say.

Hi Jane,

I have been with staysure for years, I do an annual policy. I don’t think I have ever been asked if I take chemotherapy. I have PV, I declared this, was asked if I had ever had a blood clot which is no, or any unplanned hospital admissions in the last 2 years, also no. My policy shows I am covered for all my declared medical conditions. I have never been asked what medications I take for any of them.

There are other companies you could try on the mpn voice website.

Good luck.

I’m thinking the same Judy, I don’t think I was asked anything about chemotherapy.

I’ve definitely not been asked, like you I would have declared it. It is a bit worrying though that someone has been asked? They all work from a script so it seems very strange! I know I have always said I have PV I have never said I have a blood cancer.

I have used them the last 3 years. Can’t remember if asked but if you do a quote in line it asks comes under medical disclaimer. Will. It provide cover if is currently on or awaiting chemo. Talk to agent . Then when you phone they say pre existing won’t be covered then if you taking chemo. All others things will but not Et itself. I don’t think they are medically aware as reading from scripts !

Hi Jane

I was asked whether I was on chemotherapy when I called the after hours hospital service while I was taking hydroxyurea, and I said hmm yes, but only low dose hydroxy. The operator , who was also reading from a script I think , put me though to the urgent chemo ward. Big mistake. Not at all appropriate. Very fed up registrar.

My take now is that hydroxyurea in the doses we take isn’t in the same risk category as full on chemotherapy as insurance companies ( and grumpy registrars) understand it, so if asked I’d answer “no”. But not to a company that I’d said “yes” to before.

Staysure will no longer cover me for the USA: so its Europe only, now. Pity .

All the best

Rachel

Thanks Rachel I know and agree with what you mean, I tried to explain it’s not like the string medication given in hospitals and only a tablet . but I also know how insurance companies like to get out of claims if they see anything that has not been disclosed properly . I will try others on the website link given in previous replies.

Thanks . Perhaps they may cover you for USA .

Good luck jane

I have just updated my travel insurance and have declared ET but they did not enquire about treatment or medications. I am paying an annual top up fee for the condition, so hope I am covered

Hi if you declared it I’m sure it’s ok if no questions asked about medication

I think if you are declaring that you take Hydroxy I'm sure an insurance co should know it includes the small amount of chemo therefore personally I think that should be enough x

I told them the name of tablets. I said they were chemo as Maz advised. As soon as this mentioned they had to check with supervisor and then they said if on chemo then they won’t cover that pre existing condition . So now I need to phone round other insurance company. I will just declare ET.

I declare ET, the computer will ask "have you had blood clots?" and if the answer is no, then the cost of the travel insurance will go up by a few pounds providing you do not have any other health issues. I have travelled to Brazil and Israel with no problems and no travel socks.

Thanks yes I did this too. But there was an overall declaration that asked about if you are on chemo which I must have missed before and wasn’t sure what to say so said yes that’s when the issue arose. Hopefully other insurance companies just ask about medical condition.

Sorry to have caused concerns for anyone .
