Hello! My name is Alice, I’m 19 and I suffer from anxiety, depression, OCD and autism. I’m currently on 2 antidepressants and 1 Antipsychotic (which was upped today). My doctor told me that because I have no motivation that it’s unlikely that I will engage with therapy, however I don’t know what else could help.
Well, based on my experience with anxiety and depression, there really isn't much to do other than take therapy and reinforce with the medication to get out faster and easier.
The only thing I could recommend is that you may visit another doctor to see and experiment with another type of therapy to see if you feel more comfortable and / or is more effective.
Obviously, continue with your therapy and medication, in my case I am working with a psychologist, a therapist and a neurologist at the same time and it has worked much better for me, although of course in your case it could be different, it is only a matter of trying so you know what works better for you
Been through and got out without any medication. Self talk along with motivational videos are the only solution. Medication take up to 4 weeks to show results.
You need to go for therapy and your doctor should be encouraging you. You need the medication to be right to help clear your head for you to engage. Equally a good therapist can guide and help you with this.
My opinion is that the medication should never be prescribed without therapy as you need someone to support you while you are adjusting to the medication.
It is hard, have you got someone that could go with you to therapy at least for the first few sessions to get you going? I go with my husband as he is not engaged. I then help him stay in track with doing the things the therapist suggests.
It is important you try and develop hobbies and diversions, I am always trying to divert my thoughts from my Mental and Physical health, especially at this time with this virus knocking about.
Have you asked your Doctor if there are any Mental Health Day Centres in your area, they are fantastic where people with similar problems can meet up and make friends and develop interests.
lack of motivation or not, since "motivation" is a temporary feeling, it doesn't matter in my eyes whether you "deserve" going to therapy or not. You and everyone, suffering like this and going through this hard time, deserves the right to have professional support! What stupid thing is that doctor of your even talking about, not even a professional thing to say. If you feel you need therapy, then go for it!
