Very recently I obtained a small dog and I am hoping it will help . I am lonely and always seeking company. I would like to feel more contented on my own but find it very difficult, inspite of many interests, I am in my early eighties and and feel bad at my inability to not enjoy my own company.

Hi

Sertraline is a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). I take a similar SSRI called escitalopram.

It will help with anxiety and depression.

It may not work straight away and could take a while but you will notice a definite improvement.

You may notice some side effects such as dry mouth, head aches etc but ride it out.

All the best

Tony

The medication prescribed is a normal pathway offered.

Although it may be beneficial if you can talk out your loss with someone you know and trust. A close family member will be the best who knew your partner and can relate to your grief. If there is no-one to help explain to your GP how you feel and how you life expectations have been affected by your loss.

To grieve after a loss is normal and can take a long time to get over, you need to be patient and understand these feelings are normal

The medication will take the edge of your sadness, of a period of time, however talking out your concerns will help you handle your grief and help you move on once more

I am taking it and it has helped to stop me constantly crying after having been diagnosed with a progressive life limiting illness. Persevere as it took about 8-10 weeks for it really kick in. Side effects mainly dry mouth but as I’m on other meds difficult to say about others, nothing disastrous. Try talking , if not to family member or friends, then the Well-being service or Cruse may help. If you can get out with your dog it will help you connect with others. Lots of luck,Jayne.
