Have you tried really to get help? Your GP can treat and refer you, you can try charity helplines like MIND SANE and so on, you should not be alone with these nasty thoughts. Try some things.

I can relate, as feel have been through hell in the last year (eg developed several autoimmune disorders, wife left, lost home and job, etc bleeding etc). In fact, feel am still in hell.
Anyways, here are some things which have helped me a bit. I dont know if they will help you or not but maybe.
1. local depression support group on regular basis. Funny thing is that it was listening to others and trying to help them that cheered me up more than others listening to me.
2. Chatting to a friend every day; on phone mostly atm as am in Wales and most friends are in london. Also like Zoea says, helplines can be great. If you are a guy, then try the CALM one (its for guys only). Its best helpline Ive tried apart from Headway one.
3. Exercise each day. Im just running but sport is best I think as is distracting and a darn site more fun than running up and down.
4. Finding purpose again. I was a researcher until last year but struggle to do academic work now on account of brain problems. Im trying to find something to fill the void purpose wise. Not sure what yet but I think a purpose is of upmost importance. Volunteering can do it for sure.
5. Eat healthily.
6. Be kind to yourself. Depression is an illness. Its not something we have chosen to have. Its not bad behaviour. Treat yourself to things that you enjoy. We all deserve to be happy imo.
Anyways, just some ideas.

I would like to inquire about your sleep, are you getting enough or do you get tired often.
also have you been taking any medications, do you know the side effects of any medications your taking.
has there been any issues, events, or other things you seem to obcess on, that you think about a lot, get nervous or anxious over?
would love to talk to you some more and hear about whats going threw your mind.
