Enough is enough

Evening all, new here. I've been depressed for as long as I can remember. It's slowly picked and pulled away at everything in my life and I've now nothing left for it to take. I've had enough. I wont go into it all as nobody has the time or patience to drawl through other people problems for hours so I shall save you that.

But what can I do? What can you suggest? The life I've been left with is not worth risking but there's still some I can get back.

Diagnosis and medical treatment is not an option for me. Is there any over the counter drugs that can help? I'll try anything, so if it's worked for you, please, please recommend it. No such thing as a bad idea.

  • Hi, welcome to the community. I would like to know why diagnosis or medical treatment is not an option for you

  • Mostly fear of hospitals/doctors, and what having it on my medical record will restrict me from. Thanks for the reply!

  • If you have depression you need to get help but I can understand why you dont want to its not an easy step to take.

  • It's not that I don't want help, just preferably not with lab coasts and records.

  • Mindfulness

  • And thankyou for the reply!

  • Lifestyle and computerised cbt are the start, Google mood gym. Consider st johns wort

If that fails then it's psychological management and consideration of drugs.

As satsuma says, why is medical diagnosis and management not an option for you?

  • Mostly the medical records and hospitals. If there's a way to do it anonymously that'd be ideal and I could maybe work myself up to that. Thankyou for the reply!

  • I don't see the reason. You would be unlikely to be receive hospital care, but hopefully things would settle with GP primary care. Depression is so common, your records would not in any way jeopardise your future and if you aren't improving surely medication and psychological management should be your next step forward

  • I'm worried it'll be used against me in court (Not criminal) which'll just make things worse, and I don't want it to affect my ability to go into certain job sectors.

  • Just if possible, if there's any other way I'd like to try anything else first.

  • You would have to give permission for confidential information to be released and if it's just antidepressant prescription it's unlikely to affect issues such as child care and family court

  • What is more important your life hopefully feeling happier or that people might see you differently ? There is less stigma towards certain mental health issues and you don't have to tell anyone if you don't want to well that is the rule in the uk

  • Hi depression affects us so we have no belief in medication but it's vital that you speak to your health professional and get the help you need. I've suffered with depression and anxiety since a very young age and an receiving extensive treatment just now it's a long road for recovery and there is no quick fix unfortunately it is a case of trial and error and does become soul destroying when one particular medication fails to work but we cannot give up. Talking and sharing your worries will help .

  • I have tried so much. I even tried Church, but I just can't bring myself to believe it for it to be any help. The people were really nice though. The more I throw at it to beat it back the more it seems to take from me. Thankyou for the reply

  • So sorry you're feeling bad, I suffer PTSD and as a consequence have bouts of depression. I had counselling which did help, so if there's a cause for it I would recommend , as long as you get the right counsellor. Besides that I haven't taken any drugs as I don't feel good on them so have worked on myself. I do meditation and find living in the NOW a big help as I used to constantly have mind chatter which I can manage better now. Also you need good family/friends for support, my family were part of the problem so I don't have them but make sure I see people regularly. Do you work? I left my job as a result of my illness so that hasn't helped me financially but I'm now retraining in something I can do freelance.

It's very hard to get through depression but I do believe our lifestyle helps, if we're happy and have the right support.

    Stay strong we're all here.

  • Hmm, I tried going to Church and I tried praying, which as I don't believe in a higher power, I suppose is a similar mind state to meditation? I think lie you family as initially part of the problem but I no longer have access to family and I kind of closed off all bridges with friends many years ago. I've been an isolationist now for 4 or 5 years. I was working at first, nothing massive I just managed a convenience store, but like you I also gave it up when I was really struggling with keeping face. My finances are pretty dire also. What kind of freelance work may I ask? I have looked into possibly trying to pick up some skills from home that I can utilize. Even started learning languages. Thankyou for the reply!

  • Thankyou everyone, I did not expect replies so quickly and so many of them.

  • Hello ZatZat,

Have you tried St John's Wart (from health shops). Also, exercising kicks off endorphins, the body's natural happy hormones. A brisk walk/jog in the fresh air can make a difference or 20 minutes on the treadmill at the gym. Make sure any form of exercise is aerobic, i.e. gets your breathing going. I know it's hard to make the first step and go but if it is going to make a difference it is worth pushing yourself with whatever little willpower is left. Vitamin D supplements also help as does exposure to natural sunlight without high protection for 10 minutes a day whenever possible. There are natural light lamps for sale which may help. I strongly believe WE have the power to turn our lives around. Why give the privilege to someone/something else to control the most beautiful thing you have, your feelings? To you they may be precious, to them it means nothing; could be that you start on th same page but then it changes. You have to protect yourself, you are as much worth a the next person so invest in yourself and wellbeing and cut-out anyone/anything toxic. All the Best.

  • Update: I've registered with a doctor so that the option is there if I need too.

Sorry my introduction was probably not put across the best way.
