Teaching my son how to look after his willie

MumNeedsInfoForSon profile image

My wife and I adopted our son who is almost 6 and need to talk to him about looking after his willie...I've done some googling and found to tell him to pull his foreskin back(he can do this)to clean it, but it doesn't go into detail. Does he just splash it with water? Give it a rub? How far back should he pull the skin? Is it the head of the penis he's cleaning rather than the skin?

He also keeps grabbing it and saying "it's stuck", as in to his balls... would it help if he pulled the skin back to pee and gave a little shake to remove excess pee to see if this maybe the issue? And if so how far back does he pull it to pee? Or has he maybe just got sweaty balls or something?! Is it a common issue?

Bit of an uncomfortable thing to talk to with our male friends so any advice anyone can give me on the subject is very greatly recieved!

If he can retract then he should wash the head(glans) and the skin with just water NO SOAP as it can irritate and cause infection- like reaction. Do you live in the states or the uk? When the foreskin is put back in place it gathers excess moisture so shaking either way will help. If you have any uncircumcised men in your life it's not as awkward as you think it is. It's for your sons health so most people will understand. Let me know if you need some more help!

Thanks for the reply, I'm in the UK. I'll have a little chat with him and pass on the advice 👍

No problem! Thank you for looking after your little one and reaching out for help on anatomy you aren't sure of! Very rarely do boys have issues so just make sure he's taking care if his body and all will be fine!

Really?

These aren’t silly questions if you have no male parent in the mix (I’m assuming from the wording that you’re a same sex couple). I wouldn’t really worry about retracting the foreskin at this stage - it becomes more of an issue in teenage years if it is not naturally doing so. When he is able to retract then he should wash with plain water (as Tangki has already said). It’s easy to do whilst taking a bath or shower - I just use the flow of water from the shower head whilst the foreskin is rolled back.

As for the other question, it sounds like his penis is merely sticking to his scrotum due to sweat. This is not uncommon, especially as he won’t yet have any hair on his scrotum. As long as you’re keeping him clean then I wouldn’t think that it’s a problem. But you’ll need to get used to him manhandling himself - boys love to have a fiddle!

Thanks, you guessed right, we're a same sex couple so not really clued up on make genitalia lol! I know little boys don't seem to be able to stop touching it once they discover it, it was just his comments of it sticking that had me confused! Thanks for the advice, we'll make sure he keeps clean down there and just try and get him to be a bit more discreet in public!

Normally, a six year old would just bath the outside. If he can already retract fully, rinsing with plain water is all he should do. Soap can cause infections.
