Kidney Stones

Hi guys

Has anyone here had experience of kidney stones?

I've had history of it since my early 20s. Usually every 6-7 years. Most times have resulted in my needing to go to hospital for strong pain relief and I've always managed to pass 2-3mm stones eventually.

I've been struggling this week with severe pain over night on two occasions, the 2nd being so bad I couldn't sit still and was about to go to hospital for something stronger. I know over the weekend just gone I didn't drink enough and the same goes for yesterday.

I was up 5am onwards today drinking as much fluid as I could, leaning forward, restless, couldn't lie down stand up stand still walk around without excruciating pain on the right side and my bladder.

Paracetamol and Ibuprofen didn't touch it (they took the edge off last time) and I was beside myself.

Has anyone got any tips/stories that might help me deal with it "next time"?

I know I need to drink more (I'm a healthcare assistant and I also have AF)

I know protein intake can affect it, meat especially.

I'm also overweight, but working to address this.

I know sodium can be an issue, but with the AF I also don't tend to cook with salt or use too much extra.

Anything useful you've done during an episode, before or after would be appreciated.

I thought it depends on the type of stones - oxalates via calcium containing etc. Have you ever passed a stone and had the type identified ?

Thanks for the reply - nope one occasion I was in surgical assessment and was asked to "seive" my urine but there was nothing in it. Only ever had X-ray, and an IVDU (?) scan about 10 years ago or so when it first started.

Scans have always shown 2mm stones or so but nothing more than that if I remember the reports correctly.

From my last reading on stones, why exactly they develop is still unclear. There definitely seems to be a family link, so there may be some enzyme difference etc which predisposes some people to them. Some stones are oxalate/calcium , so having a lower oxalic acid diet may help. There are some rare genetic conditions that can predispose.
