Hereditary kidney stones

I'm an 18 y/o male. My father and grandfather have had kidney stones ( My father has had 3 yet). From what I've heard, they can be really unpleasant. My question is: Can I prevent them? If I take preventive measures. Can I avoid them, even if they run in my family?

I had a kidney stone last year and it was the worst pain I've ever had for anything. When it passed I asked my Dr how do I stop getting another because he said I'm prone to getting then now I had one and all he said was 'drink lots of water thats the best way to stop them'

Thanks steviemay, have you made any dietary changes? Since it runs in my family, I want to do everything I can to prevent them.

Drink copious amounts of water. Chemistry 101. If a liquid becomes saturated with "salts" and calcium it will crystallize resulting in kidney stones. Lots of water will keep your urine diluted. Been there. VERY painful.

Thanks for the reply! I aim to drink at least 3.5 liters of water a day, but I'm just worried about getting them (especially considering the fact that it runs in my family). About the pain, from what I've heard, it can be really incapacitating. My dad says that he'd rather take a kick to the balls.

The ureter, tube that runs from the kidney to the bladder, is very small. Kidney stones are crystallized formations of calcium and salts with very sharp jagged edges. You may see blood in your urine as the "stones" cut into the side wall of the ureters (one for each kidney). Kidney stones vary in size.

I was told to drink 8 cups (8 fluid oz. cup) which is 64 oz. (1/2 gal) per day.

Besides having a ton of water, would you recommend any dietary changes?

in reply to Wolf1902

It actually feels like some one kicked you in the balls! and the pain run through all of your lower abdomen, balls and thru the back.

They say to reduce vegetables with a high mineral content such as rhubarb, asparagus etc as this can calcify in the kidneys

I have had kidney stones all my adult life. it starter when I was 21, then every two years I would end up in the ER with the worst pain. I have tried many things but overall lots of water and avoid sugary soda drinks. good luck.
