Glans still hyper sensitive after circumcision op 6 weeks ago. Help?

I am in my mid 20s and had a circumcision 6 weeks ago for medical reasons. I've read everywhere online that it takes just a few weeks for everything to be healed and to be able to wear clothes again.

However, I still seem to be unable to wear any underwear or clothes 6 weeks after my operation due to hypersensitivity of my glans. The back doesn't have much pain, the sides have moderate pain but the front has extreme pain - it's painful when anything brushes against it. I've been told by clinicians to wear underwear but it's just too painful to do so. I am currently taking 3 different painkillers (codeine, naproxen and paracetamol) and using Instilligel (anaesthetic gel) - still, this doesn't really help with the pain!

I am stuck in a small flat, extremely lonely, getting both depressed and frustrated, unable to see the other side. Will this ever heal?

Is there anything else I can try? I have a holiday coming up in 2 weeks and feel like I just won't be able to make it. My workplace is about to put me on SSP - which will mean I'll lose over a grand a month in pay. Feel like I'm completely stuck here.

Try putting a gauze over the gland while wearing underwear I’m 5 days in and I have my underwear on with gauze under the frenulum area

I will be trying that today. Do you find that the gauze will get stuck to the glans? Do you have to shower to get it off?

It doesn’t stick I use the non stick gauze I’m only on day 8 and able to wear underwear put a lil Vaseline on it you’ll be fine

Hey man. I think that unfortunately if you do want the penis head sensitivity to go away, you are going to need to stop making your head moisturized (with the anesthetic gel) and start wearing underwear, only then will the head start to keratinize and feel less sensitive to things brushing on it or clothes.

I know it’s easier said than done. I’m on day 3 and the head is very sensitive so I know your struggle.

I have been told that the entire healing process can take up to 6 months so unfortunately you could still only be at the very beginning of the healing/recovery process. The outside might look fine but on the inside the head is still healing.

You should try to give it more time and also try to bite the bullet because otherwise you will never get used to it and it will always hurt.

And I definitely think that you should try your best to have your head exposed to certain things even if it hurts because you should go on that holiday in two weeks.

Hang in there and good luck. You’re not alone!!

Thanks - I bit the bullet and managed to get my underwear on - even went out to the back garden! I didn't realise the anaesthetic gel was making it more sensitive - the urologist at my hospital actually recommended I use it to numb the glans! Shows how much some of the NHS staff know about this operation!

It’s very hard to get used to that’s for certain. I’m on day 6 and night 5 last night was the worst one. Painful erections and some weird pain there and there as I still have some swelling. Everything is worse when you haven’t slept well so I’m like a zombie today that’s so pissed off because now I have to deal with the head sensitivity continuously...

the gel you're using is not just for numbing it is also a lubricant.Lubricants increase your sensitivity so make it worse for you.Try numbing it with a delay spray from ebay or amazon

I didn't realise that! I decided not to apply the anaesthetic gel yesterday and I managed to put on my boxers and set off a few fireworks in the back garden! Thanks for the advice.

Get off all of those meds and go cold turkey or you’ll just perpetuate the status quo. If you have any lose skin, try pulling it up over the corona to shield it from touching fabric. Wear tight briefs to prevent movement of fabric ove the glans.

I'm definitely reducing my medication every few days. I've stopped the codeine now and it doesn't feel much different so that's a good thing.

Keep the glans dry, put a gauze round it and put it upwards in tight underwear so that your penis can't move much. You'll see that after a few days it's gonna be much better!

Thanks for the advice - do you know if there is a guide anywhere on how to put the gauze around it? I don't want to be doing it wrong!

I don't think you can do something wrong. Just take a gauze that's big enough for your glans, put it around and fix the ends together with a medical tape. Put then your penis upwards in tight underwear. I guarantee you that it will work!

SB_SB in reply totimmyboy20

Awesome - thanks. I will try that. How do you get it off afterwards? I'm assuming it will stick to the glans. Do you have to shower it off?

timmyboy20 profile image
timmyboy20 in reply toSB_SB

Be sure that the gauze is a bit greater that the ends can overlap so that the tape doesn't stick to your glans!

Oh boy! That would be painful!

Yeah, indeed!

How often should I change the gauze? Urine will get onto it when going to the toilet.

timmyboy20 in reply toSB_SB

I would change it at least twice a day

How did you stop the tip sticking to the boxers? The gauze came off fine but the tip got stuck to my boxers... had to remove that in the shower!

Make sure that the gauze is long enough that it has some overhang.

if you wear boxers try changing to tight fitting underwear for now as that will stop a lot of movement down there, maybe get some a size smaller than usual. If you're in the uk M&S do some microfiber ones that would be good

Yeah, luckily M&S is only about 100m away from my house so I'll see if I can get some more tight underwear today. It's horrible when taking them off because they get a little stuck so causes some pain.

Just an update - yesterday evening, I was confident enough to ear trousers and venture outside for the first time - then I realised that none of my trousers did up!! Apparently 6.5 weeks of no exercise makes you a bit fatter haha!

Got some new jeans delivered this morning and went for a walk to the doctor's surgery to pick up my sick notes. Just over a mile walked with no problems whatsoever!

Really - thanks for everyone's suggestions. It has really helped.

I've also managed to get an appointment with a urologist for Saturday morning so finally getting to see one since the operation.

I just read your journey glad you’re doing better. I got circumcised 10 days ago and I’m still naked not wearing clothes wondering if I should try touching the head but I cringe on the fact that it will hurt so much. Don’t know what to do to speed up the process of getting better. I’d like to wear some sort of underwear and it’s been so frustrating.
