Have Impotence Surprised at examination

Im a 67 year old type 2 diabetic and suffered worsening impotence even with use of prescribed Viagra.

My GP sent me to a Urology consultant. The first thing he did was examine my prostate and also check my testicals and finding all normal. He suggested an alternative drug to Viagra and is referring me on to another clinic should the new drug not be a success.

Although I have no objection to the examination I don't know how relevant prostate and testicles examination is? Although there was no suggestion or suspicion on my part anything inappropriate happened I'm just puzzled?

I've Googled this in depth and found no reference to such examination in a case like mine. I wonder if the answer is the consultant was just being thorough?

Any input on this would be appreciated especially from any medical professionals

Thanks
