Hi all first time UTI at age 63 and subsequent realisation that my urinary system function been in slow decline for more than a few years, such as poor flow and not feeling fully relieved after passing urine. Since the single UTI 3 month ago issues greatly worsened, often feel bladder drains down rather than flows out. PSA within normal range although higher than my baseline. Full bloods and finger exam OK. GP refereed me to a urologist 28 week wait on NHS so paid private . ultrasound of bladder kidneys and prostrate. Prostrate shows moderate enlarged 45? Private Urologist initial diagnosis BPH causing but wants me to come in for flexible telescope examination of the bladder, beyond means so now on the NHS waiting list advised 8 weeks. Any BPE self help or other appreciated.

Prostate issues probably BPH?? Is there a specific Forum for this condition and prostrate health?
I am also 63 , had this issue since I was 50 , finally decided to get it sorted 6 weeks ago I paid private and had the Holep laser treatment don’t think it’s available on the NHS like turp only lasts a lot longer , all the nerve tissue is still in tacked so no damage to sexual function , I am told turp can damage all the nerves so I opted for Holep . Best decision ever completely back to normal within 3 weeks of surgery , life changing . Good luck 👍🙏
Thanks Gaz pleased for you op went well and you are are sounding so satisfied with outcome. Hindsight is a great power realised now I have has deteriorating function for years but it had just become the new normal until the UTI hit then 🔥 in the hold 🙄
I had about 3 UTI’s back to back while I was waiting for the op, even got one while away on a cruise in Southeast Asia , not fun as you know , and he humidity absolutely knocked the stuffing out of me cost me 400$ to see and doctor and get the right anti-biotics , I also have RA which complicated things .
Similar to Gaz227. But I had the op (turp) at 58. History: i had noticed I could no longer pee over the garden fence when my neighbour annoyed me, plus I was going to the loo too frequently. GP put me on Tamsulosin (flowmax?) Which provided relief from symptoms and that was it for a few years then I realised it had gotten worse. Back to the GP who put me in the waiting list. This was 2.5y ago so I paid and had it done privately as the health service was clogged up with COVID.Post op - no complications or side effects. Normal loo habits. Still can't pee over the garden fence but neighbour is less annoying.
NHS advice - check out your local hospitals urology depts on the web and see who does what - there are a range of options as you will learn. So get yourself referred to a hosp which does what you want. In the end my prostate was so big ("not seen one that big in 15 years of being a theatre nurse") it had to be a turp, so their may be medical reasons influencing the outcome.
The camera down the pipe is 'uncomfortable' nothing more, going to the dentist is way worse. Best of luck, Gary
My 69y/o dad's had BPH >12y and just follows a Nutritional Therapy protocol so had no drugs or operations, procedures for it . His condition is relatively mild/moderate 🤞
PSA is indeed likely to be elevated and dad's is 1.8 latest. What's yours?
Note that it is reported that PSA concentrations may double every 5 years in the early stages of BPH nps.org.au/australian-presc...
my PSA was low throughout , 2.4 , they found nodules on my prostate during the check up so I had to have an MRI and then CT as I was getting Kidney pain but it turned out the kidney pain was caused by a uti , they are common in men with prostate issues. I believe smaller prostate glands are fine for turp , but if you have a very large prostate Holep is the preferred treatment in the private sector anyway , NHS costs tend to put us all in the same boat .
I'm in the U.S. My uro poo-pooed saw palmetto "If it worked, we'd be prescribing it."
He recommended TRUP and after I researched the procedure and the recovery (CATHETER!) And possible side effects, I declined.
My urine stream had become a trickle at time, so, grasping at straws, I tried saw palmetto. I have seen a gradual improvement. Not right away, but over a month or two. Could be a coincidence, but I'll keep taking it as long as I'm doing much better.
It's fairly cheap here in the states. $40 for e40 capsules from Puritan's pride.
Good luck.
Might try inspire.com and earthclinic.com and search for your issues?
I'm 73 now and have avoided surgery. Had more & more UTIs as increasing prostate enlargement caused retention. Not fully emptying means old urine tends to fester. Am now on 2 drugs finasteride and alfuzosin which permit natural voiding, but what's helped most is frequent use of intermittent catheters to fully empty. When I used them x2 a day, I still needed antibiotics, but now I use them after every natural urination, I'm free of infection symptoms, although I do see cloudy urine at end of the emptying, so my body is obviously producing leucocytes, but it feels like it's winning against the bacteria now.
