fears of Prostate Cancer

I recently had a physical examination and PSA blood tests for prostate cancer, I was told they were clear and so the likelihood was that I had Benign Prostate Hyperplasia.

I could cope with hearing that, but I also now have dull pains in my groin the tops of my legs which I have read is only really a symptom on prostate cancer and not BPH. Does anyone know if the BPH a can sometimes cause hip and leg pain, too - as I hope it can - or should I conclude that I have prostate cancer that has spread?

I’m struggling to get another appointment at my GP surgery, but I’m hoping they’ll make space to see me if I tell them that I have these leg and hip pains, too.

I’d insist that your GP refers you to a urologist/consultant. Sometimes I get pain in the groin area and have been told it may be chronic prostatis which can only be managed. I’ve seen numerous GPs and still don’t have a diagnosis!! The hip pain absolutely needs investigating and the urologist should be able to give you more definitive advices on whether or not you are at risk of prostate cancer. If your PSA is low (but the test is not definitive) you should be fine but obviously I’m not a doctor. Also remember that prostatis has very similar symptoms to prostrate cancer so you need to careful and. It run away with worst case scenario. Have you tried lifestyle changes? I’ve got out fizzy drinks, caffeine and alcohol save for a couple of cheeky beers here and there and it has made a difference. However, from time to time the prostatis returns and I can feel my prostrate squeezing on my bladder hence I need to go to a wee! Sometimes the doctors are too quick to throw you on medication and you need to be guarded. I was advised to take tamouslin on a trial basis and declined until I had a diagnosis. Im 51 my wife is 39 and I wasn’t keen on the side effects including renegrade ejaculation! Keep pursuing them and you will get there. Hope my comments help to some degree - take care and good luck.

Hello G2409

Your comments did help me, thank you.

I’ll certainly be asking to be referred to a urologist, and in fact the Nurse Practitioner that I spoke said that was something he said he’d do if the prescribed medication didn’t work - which is hasn’t.

Thank you, also, for saying to me that the pains that I’m suffering could be down to prostatitis, and not prostate cancer. I couldn’t find anything about the similar symptoms online, but I think that was because in my panic I hadn’t really considered anything other than cancer. Your comments lifted me to a little hope for a while, and I can only be grateful for that.

no problem Astray: try and get along to the urologist and press them for a more definitive diagnosis. It won’t be an easy journey I’m still not there but as I understand it they can’t be that definitive with prostatis and as I said earlier the symptoms can be similar. Have a look at the NHS online guides too as these can be helpful. Take care and good luck!

Thank you for this, g2409. I have a fair bit in confidence in the medic that I’m seeing over this, and I:think it’s a mark of how good he is at his job that he always seems to have time to answer my many questions.

hi,

I’m not sure if I have anything to say that’ll help however, I’ve had prostate scares in the autumn of 2021 and winter 22.

Started September, I had a pain in my cocsix , tail bone area. It was a bit painful to sit down. My lower back hurt. I thought it could be prostate as it burned when I peed. I had a cocktail of blood test along with PSA. All came back fine! The following month I had pelvic pain for a two weeks. I spontaneously peed the bed. Went to doctors who didn’t even examine me. He gave my meds. They actually worked after two days. End of story.

Until January 22. I had tingling sensations in my pelvis and an so area. Went to doctors, she said it was prostatitis without examining me. I wasn’t having burning sensations or a problem with seeing. On tablets, they made me very unwell. I stopped, went to another doctor who DID examine my. I couldn’t even feel it when he touched it. He says it feels normal. I was still having pelvic pain. I ended up having pelvis x-ray which… was normal.

There’s chance the pain “could” have nothing to do with prostate. I don’t know what it was in the end but I certainly got sciatica through this.

A second opinion wouldn’t hurt. A second PSA test if you can get another one done mind you. Nerve and muscle might be an issue also.

I hope you get to find out what’s going on soon.

Thank you for your reply, Schoodle, and be assured that your comments did help me, if only to help me to feel I’m not alone.

The pain in my hips and legs seems to have largely gone for now, so I’m hoping the matter will soon resolve itself. Our bodies, whilst being the amazing things they are, can be extremely baffling at times.

Have a happy weekend, and take care.

thank you Astray. As I might have said that by the time I had an x-ray in April 2022, my pelvic and back psin had largely gone! Throughout the summer and autumn I hardly noticed any pain at apart from the occasional very mild pain. However, come a January it’s returned. I find I’m in bed. I starts when I sand at the sink and then the pain is mild but sets in for the day. Strange. Beyond the prostate with the assumption that yours is as happy as Larry, like mine, could we be looking muscles issues or even nerve issues? 🤷‍♂️

Have great weekend yourself, take care.

Pain is not a symptom of prostate cancer at least in the early stages, so if your PSA score is low, any pain is very unlikely to be cancer. Remember anyway that a lot of men have prostate cancer but it isn't what kills us. I've had low grade prostate cancer (identified by biopsy) for many years now. It didn't need treatment and hasn't developed. I have BPH which is causing much more of a problem for me than the cancer.
