First week of circumcision, is the healing alright?

I had a circumcision last week (on 13th) for medical reasons at one of the NHS hospital (UK).

I followed the doctor instructions so i took off the dressing after 48hrs and i started having a shower everyday to make it easier to clean it. During the night i i always have so many boners and it's really painful as it stretch the part where they did the surgery and start loosing blood. I did not apply any dressing after taking off the first one as i was not told by the doctor to do so, and I'm worried about the night erection as i think it's not helping with the healing. Due to night erection it has build scabs over the stiches and it's quite hard as it doesn't come off during the shower and It's too sensitive when i touch the area. I also noticed that where the frenulum was before it's really swallen just on the left side and it's a bit difficult to start urinate after the operation as my urine start coming off after 5 second. Are those symptoms normal after the surgery? Is there any tips to heal properly and faster?

Swelling between incision site and glans rim is quite normal on first weeks.

You can read more about wound healing here:

About daily wound care here:

Part of the modern wound care is to cover the wound until the incision site is healed and there is no discharge anymore.

A strip of paraffin gauze to contact layer prevents the woven gauze stuck into dried wound discharge.

Homemade saline: Boil 1 litre of tap water and add 1 tea spoon of table salt. Stir. You can bath your penis in a bowl or a tea mug, when the solution is cooled down near the body temperature. 5-10 min, once a day. You can rinse with it too. Some German doctors suggest bath with chamomile.

Thanks you for your reply, i will try to clean it with the saline water soon. As it is swollen in some part where the scabs is and it's covering half of the stiches, do i need to pull my skin to clean it and should i also remove the scabs?

Do not remove the scabs. If you are able to pull the skin for cleaning, do it. At least dry it properly after cleaning.

Hi i had some white liquid coming out of the stiches. Should i be worry as i read online that it could be an infection? I just hope that everything is ok..

That all sounds pretty normal. Just hang in there, it will get better through time. The night time erections are so painful, and I hate to tell you but they will be until the stitches come away. It tried everything I could to ease them, but nothing really worked for me. Lying on my side and bringing my knees up to my chest until the erection went down helped a little, but not much.It sound like you are doing everything right. The only difference in what you are saying and what I was told was to use a small sterile container and bathe the wound in salt and water.

Thank you for your reply. I did try to sleep on my side but didn't help, i had an erection every hour and i couldn't sleep all the night yesterday. Do you remove the scabs when washing it? As it has build over the stiches and the part of it is still swollen and i will need to pull my skin to clean it properly, but it will probably make it bleed again if i do as it might stretch the stiches.

Don’t pick or pull at the scabs mate, get a cup or glass and fill it with lukewarm salty water(Table salt is fine) and soak your penis in it for 5 mins or so twice a day. This will loosen the scabs, peeling skin and blood blisters etc and also clean the wound.Make sure that you throughly wash it off after soaking and make sure you dry everything well…I’d recommend using a hairdryer on low to do this, much easier and quicker this way. When you get an erection get up and walk around as this drains blood away from your penis and make sure you have a bag of frozen peas close to hand, wrap the bag in a clean tea towel and hold it on your erection to get it down faster and also sooth it.I had to sit down to pee for the first 6 weeks or so as it was like sprinkler going off all over the bathroom.

Hi, i did use your technique today. With lukewarm salty water in a cup and it has help to remove some old scabs and dead skin. But just now i went to the toilet and noticed that while I was urinating there was some white liquid like pus coming out from the area where i had the scabs before. I'm not feeling any pain but i read online that it could be an infection. What should I do? Do i need to contact the doctor or should I wash it off and wait? I'm just worried that I'm not healing properly. After the surgery i was also told by the doctor that i lost a big amount of blood which doesn't happen all the time during circumcision, i don't know if maybe it's related to what is happening now.

I’m not sure what the discharge is mate,I’d get your doc to check it out,it’s probably nothing to worry about, but it’s best to make sure and put your mind at rest(I went back to mine 3x because I was worried about things)If it’s an infection then antibiotics will clear it up.Good luck.😊👍

Yes seems pretty normal although I did not shower until 8 days post surgery (no water especially on the incision site) was mainly doing sponge baths and changed dressing every alternate days to keep it dry. Post that my doctor advised to keep it free without any dressing and keep applying tbact with the oral antibiotics.Currently almost near to complete 5 weeks post op this Saturday and swelling has reduced quite a lot and down to one stitch, able to walk well and wear normal clothes without any discomfort awaiting for the last stitch to fall.

Coming to boners at night all I can say you need to be strong and bear the discomfort it sucks big time especially week 1 and 2 but gradually it gets better. What I did I stopped drinking water post 6 pm and emptied bladder before going to bed to minimize erections and slept in fetal position. When I had, it woke me up and I engaged myself with some YT vids. But trust me after couple of weeks you will be much better and able to handle boners (it wont wake you up atleast).

Yes I too had the delay in urine for around 8-10 days as swelling was there but later it was totally normal. I had to sit and pee for 3.5 weeks straight because of the swelling.

Be strong brother you are doing a great job just maintain good hygiene and follow your medication and rest as much as possible it will help.

You may see occasional bleeding its normal don’t freak out only if its out of control contact your doctor.

Peace

I thought i was the only one that had a delay urinating, thank you for your reassurance. How have you deal with scabs? When did you go back to your normal daily activity? I took 2 weeks off as my work involve lots of walking and i do 60 hours a week due to my placement with uni and my normal job. I'm just worry that if i start working i would have some issue with the healing.

For me it is WFH so I took couple of days leave post OP and then I was just chilling in bed and working. But I took slow progress kept minimal movement for atleast a week and since I was home I was just covering the area with a robe kind of clothes in Hindi its called Dhoti to keep it airy and yet loose. Only after 3 weeks I started wearing loose short pants feels kinda funny initially but after 3 days I was ok with the feeling and I wear briefs so it holds good I dont feel much post wearing briefs now tbh but yeah after 3 weeks I started wearing normal clothes.

Talking about scabs I didn’t pick on them just kept applying betadine and water and let it be and please make sure to wet the dressing before removal else you will regret the pain as for me the first time I had dried blood and scab stuck to the gauze and I pulled it out (ouch!).

Next day I just wet the gauze for 10 mnt and it easily opened .

If possible for 2 weeks just chill and take things slowly as you are the best judge on when you feel you are ready if sutures start falling try wearing clothes and if you feel uncomfortable wrap it in gauze and try wearing undies but keep it open as much possible for better healing thats what my doc recommended.

P.S: stitches will hurt once they become stiff and poke clothes

Sounds very similar to my experience which I blogged about here - circ.blog. Night erections were a pain, particularly in week 2. Not much to do about them than grin and bear it. At least they're a sign that everything's working ok. It will get better, for me it was around day 10

Hey man! I see you already have several replies here, so I'm just here to tell you what I did to decrease nocturnal erections.

After a lot of research, since I was desperate with pain, and after trying a lot of things, including putting my knees close to the chest, the only thing that worked for me was to wet my wrist area with cold water and let it run until the erection is gone.

It's annoying to have to get up during the night 3x or more to wet the inside of your wrist, but for me it paid off because it decreased the time of pain.

You can always try it. Any questions, let me know and I hope I helped

I just went to use the toilet to urinate and noticed that there was some white liquid like pus that was coming off from where I was bleeding before( it just appeared now). I read online that it could be an infection. I'm not feeling any pain at the moment. Do i need to inform the doctor?

If I were in your case, I would inform your doctor. It may even be normal, but at least you have a clear conscience.

No they are not, there should not be any bleeding. Check doc asap.
