It can cause gastric upsets in the amounts used in supplements and isn't as good as some of the claims make out. It also doesn't mix well with many prescription drugs so do check if you decide to use it, Many people with other inflammatory disorders find it helpful used in cooking but don't do well with the supplements. Everyone is different.

Turmeric supplements (capsules) are hugely hyped by manufacturers and marketing companies. Also hugely expensive in health food shops eg H&B and online 🥹 whilst you can buy a 500g bag of turmeric powder for £1.50 from any Indian /Pakistani grocery shop.👆👍

It’s from the ginger root/rhizome family and I use it in cooking curries etc. There’s evidence that it does reduce inflammation eg in rheumatoid arthritis but the highly concentrated supplements are risky!👆

Here’s a good paper that summarises the benefits & disbenefits written by a woman oncology nutritionist:

thanks I think from what I’ve researched they are a waste of money and may cause more harm

It does make a difference to my joint pain. If you decide to try it, get a good quality brand and take it with pepper (either ground or unground) for absorption. Trial it for a month to give it a chance to kick in. I find even taking it every second day makes a difference.

I take it, I buy the best quality I can and it’s helped with nerve pain a lot. I don’t take any other pain meds as I’ve found they cause so many side effects and only work briefly with me.

What kind of pain does it help? And how much do you take? Thx

It’s helped with peripheral nerve pain in my feet and has particularly helped with reducing numbness. I take 10,000mg once a day and I buy a formula mixed with black pepper and boswellia serrata. I have a friend who is a professor in anatomy and he recommended it to me, along with many other things that help with nerve damage and pain, such as eating a cup of blueberries everyday. It’s important to buy the best quality turmeric supplement you can afford and you should notice a difference within 20-30 minutes 😊

Ok. But does it interfere with other medications?

You would need to check, I’ve heard mixed messages on that score, so you would need to check beforehand. I always check anything recommended, even if it’s by my professor friend, who has my best interests at heart.

I tried it recently hoping it would help my joint pain but unfortunately all it did was give me explosive diarrhoea!
