Hi, I have Lupus and Sjogrens . This year has been difficult with increased photosensitivity.
Skin rash has spread to my scalp. Red spots and flaky and itchy. Scalp can feel very sensitive at times.
Just wondering if any one has had the same problem and what treatment was used?
I am on 6 monthly Rituximab Infusions, Mepacrine, Dermovate Cream, and maintenance Steroids 5 mg per day.

Hi Haired, I get problems with rashes under my hair line and have been prescribed various treatments in the past and the one I find works the best is betnovate lotion I put it on before going to bed so that it is not noticeable not that it is too unsitely being a light lotion.

Hi haired, yes you will need a prescription ask specifically for the lotion its very light so doesn't mat up your hair much. I find it really effective and from description you gave should really help you.

I get the Scalp irritations lately & I have been able to get rid of them, but they do come back.
I tried more natural remedies, with HYDROCORTISONE over the Counter. It takes about a week, but they do go away. One dermatologist said they were PRE-CANCEROUS SPOTS - 🤔🤔🤔
Then, how did I get them to go away?
I put the HYDROCORTISONE CREAM on 2-3 times per day. Also, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR soaks on a small pad applied to the “areas” of irritation/bumps, etc & hydrogen-peroxide small pad soaks. I alternated during the day with these & they seem to get better within a 4-5 day period.
But - they did return later. So, I started again w/routine.
I have shown to GP & Rheumatologist & both think the hydrocortisone CREAM is a good idea for LUPUS SCALP IRRITATIONS.
A STEROID CREAM could help?? It does help with Subcutaneous Lupus skin issues.

Hi, thank you for your reply links have lots of information. I have Dermovate for legs, back and arms. Tried a little on the first red spot eased a bit but scalp overall is now very itchy, flaking and tender. Hard to see your own scalp ! But my sister says crown of my heart is very red.
Back with my dermatologist recently maintenance, steroid increased to 5 mg daily rheumatologist also increased medication to include mepacrine. I find Mepacrine helps with Sjogrens symptoms Having my next Infusion, 21st of September, which I hope will help as I have had flares since my last Infusion.

Let me know if you have success in healing. I also read the NERVOUS SYSTEM could have gotten stimulated causing the Scalp Issues. Just not much real Data for “lupus & Scalp” 💜
Sounds like scalp psoriasis to me I have the same thing.
Hi, I’ve got discoid lupus along with RA. The DLE has been really difficult to control and part of the problem is you can’t see what you’re trying to treat. Dermatology prescribed a Dermovate scalp ointment (steroid) and also suggested Eucerin scalp ointment which can be bought in Boots etc (non steroid). Eucerin shampoo is also quite good. I’m afraid it really is trial and error and a git to try and manage x
Hi, thank you for your reply. Is the Dermovate you use on scalp the same as cream you use on your body?
It comes in an ointment form rather than cream with a funnel type lid. So, easier to apply to the scalp. I would imagine it is the same stuff. My dermatologist prescribed it so would imagine a GP could too.

Use only gentle shampoos that are marked as having no sulfates which people with lupus are sensitive to.
Avoid using hair products like hair spray and mousse etc. Perfumes and chemicals can be a problem.
Use gentle laundry detergent designed for babies on your pillows with no perfume since you'll be rubbing your scalp on the pillow at night and that can cause a reaction.
also use shampoos that treat eczema and psoriasis at least once a week. They will reduce plaques on the scalp.
Don't use conditioners on the scalp, just hair ends, because greasy conditioners can block pores and make it worse.
And most important, stay out of the sun! Cover with a hat if you're going to be out more than a minute or two.
It's far worse in summer due to the stronger sun then.
