Had my third vaccine
My own lay and humble opinion is we can keep ourselves safe observing precautions as before. Much is still unknown, international travel is rife, flu season is imminent and research is ongoing. So yes we can be safe as long as we are also careful - who wouldn’t be in our position.I await a barrage of conflicting views ……
I'm still shielding, only going out for medical appointments. still washing my shopping when it's delivered. I was considering stopping the shopping washing but then I heard from the delivery driver there was an outbreak at the depot. covid numbers are higher in my area now than they have ever been, and that is just those that are known and not all.
Can’t be too careful and caution costs nothing 😉
I agree with you, I still social distance etc.
Surely, my understanding is, that the third primary vaccine is stronger than the booster? I would be feeling much happier in your position for having had the third primary. I’m still waiting for mine, hopefully at the end of this month. I’d far rather have the third primary now than the booster. I know what stillsdisease means about the barrage of comments. My niece’s husband has just been diagnosed with covid. No symptoms whatsoever. They are moving house and for the last four weeks we have been helping them with the packing and move. My husband spent 2 days in a van cab with him, and dismantling wardrobes close distance etc. The day his test results came back (required for work) 12 people in total in our close group were in close contact with him as they helped us. All of us have had both lateral flow and PCR tests that were negative. My step-son, aged 34 and who I helped bring up from the age of 15, who had been in contact with him, amazed me by saying he had not been jabbed at all! He then went on about how I had been sucked in by the government’s propaganda and that the vaccine is nothing more than a placebo to stop people panicking. He was actually mocking me, saying that this is nothing more serious than the flu and, in fact, more people die from the flu than covid. I need to accept that people will die as part of the process and we have to accept that and learn to live with it! I was furious! I really argued the point and threw statistics that most of us now know. The figures given by the government are doctored. Previously we were given the death rate. Now we are given the the death rate of “those who died within 28 days of receiving a positive covid test”. What about the people who never got tested? What about those who die on the 29,30, 59th day? Are they any less dead??? I cannot believe that someone intelligent has this blinkered attitude. Why do the younger people seem to think they know better when they haven’t looked into it that deeply? I would point out though, that this young man who doesn’t believe in it all, immediately took a lateral flow and went for a PCR test! Oh this was “because of work”. If he had it, surely it would need to take its natural course and whatever happened happened?? Furious and still amazed that my own close family feel like that when he knows I am compromised and so worried. His sister lives a few streets away from me in flat above a business. She has high functioning autism and lives the life of a recluse really. In the last 2 years she has been out where other people are five times only for medical or optical appointments when I have taken her and to attend a children's birthday tea with just family. She is so afraid of catching covid that when she comes to my house (usually when there is nobody about outside) she sits a distance away from us. He knows all this and still hasn’t been vaccinated. As she sat in the same room after my husband had been in contact with the infected person she has been affected greatly by this because we posted LFTs through her door to let her check herself. Aaaarrrrgh!
It's not only younger people that have this view and there's a lot more than you'd think. Being intelligent has nothing to do with how you see it. If it makes you feel safe stay home, test, vaccinate but don't attack others for seeing things differently. This government are not interested in keeping us safe. We have to do this for ourselves. Take care.
Hi, it’s not seeing things differently. He cannot accept facts about death rates etc. he thinks it’s just a placebo but several people with serious chest problems have found a benefit just from having the jabs. Reduced problems. And it’s not just mind over matter, a friend of mine was a matron in the NHS and has serious chest problems and heart failure and her life has been greatly improved since having the doses. I don’t really understand what you’ve said about the dose as the mass vaccination centre said that if I was closer to my due date they would book me in for the booster but instead give me the 3 rd primary to expedite the process. If they are both the same why would they say that?
It’s very much a personal opinion, I shielded when advised hated every second of it and became someone I despised. Am back at work, I’m a physio so close contact but take all the PPE precautions. I have had my 3 primary doses 🤞hopefully they will do their job. My social life is not the same as before, I have gone back to sports outside and am due to go out for a friends 50th this evening but will judge what I think when I get there and leave if not happy. We all need to do what we think is best for us from both a physical and psychological point of view and respect each other’s choices x
Hi bowenlady, I don’t think the 3rd is different from booster except if it’s classed as 3rd you will be called for an extra booster in 6 months? It’s all very confusing. My husband will be called again in April but I won’t (that’s my theory but will see next year) your not alone with your stepson, I have 2 son in laws, one who refused point blank because his thoughts were, it’ll give him covid! And the 2nd had first vaccine, caught covid was mildly unwell and now thinks it’s not necessary to get 2nd dose! As others have said there are many people from all backgrounds, young and old that have their own opinions and all we can do is be sensible in what we do. I have started to venture out a bit more but will only go into a local shop when it’s not crowded. It amazes me that I’m now in the minority of wearing a face mask. I’ve also taken to doing LFT twice weekly as I do also see my grandchildren who all attend school. Out of interest, was it only the one person who caught covid amongst the rest of you who were helping to move house? Out of my two children's houses, one son in law caught it, my daughter and 2 children didn’t and other son in law who had it, also saw 2grandchildren test positive but my daughter and other 2 grandchildren didn't! Amongst one positive and one negative were 5 year old twins!
Liz2468, I like to think we are safe, if we are careful in what we do.
Suznnah16, it never occurred to me to wash my shopping! Do you mean everything? Like tins, bottles etc or just fresh things? I’ve only ever washed my hands and disinfected the work tops where the items have sat before putting in fridge and cupboard. I have noticed some of the drivers now come with no mask but are still respectful of keeping distance.
A third dose of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine is being offered for people with a severely weakened immune system. This third primary dose is an extra ‘top-up’ dose to help increase the level of protection for people who may not have generated a full immune response to the first two doses and might be less protected than the wider population.
A third dose is different from a booster dose. A booster dose is an additional dose to extend the duration of protection from previous doses.
If you are eligible for a third primary dose, you will also need a booster dose to extend the protection from your previous doses. The Joint Committee of Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) will provide further guidance on the timing of boosters for this group in due course.
Who is being offered a third dose?
People aged 12 years and over who had a severely weakened immune system around the time they had their first two doses of the coronavirus vaccine are now being offered a third dose. This includes those who had or have:
blood cancers (such as leukaemia or lymphoma)
lowered immunity due to treatment (such as steroid medication, biological therapy, chemotherapy or radiotherapy)
lowered immunity due to inherited disorders of the immune system
an organ or bone marrow transplant
diseases that affect the immune system such as poorly controlled HIV.
If you are eligible, NHS Scotland will contact you to arrange your appointment. If you have not received an appointment and think you’ve been missed, contact your clinician or GP to discuss whether you should get a third dose.
You may also be offered the flu vaccine at the same time as your third dose. The flu vaccine is the safest and most effective way to help protect against flu.
Research has proven that it is safe to get the COVID-19 and flu vaccine at the same time, and it’s as effective as giving them at different times
Having the third dose may reduce your chance of catching the coronavirus infection. If you do get coronavirus, the symptoms may be less severe and the illness shorter, than if you had not had the third dose.
How many doses will I need?
At this time, people with a severely weakened immune system are being offered one extra dose to help improve protection.
People with a severely weakened immune system are currently being offered a third dose. They will also need a booster dose to extend the protection from previous doses, six months later.
A booster dose is an additional dose to extend protection from the first doses.
Booster doses are currently being offered to people at higher risk from coronavirus.
Timing of a third dose
The third dose should be given at least eight weeks after your second dose, but the timing will depend on any treatment you may be having. Your health specialist can advise on the best time to have your third dose.
If you have a weakened immune system and have been given an earlier second or third dose appointment for clinical reasons, you should attend your appointment as planned.
If you have recently tested positive for coronavirus, you should wait until four weeks after the date you were tested to get any dose of the vaccine. You should do this even if you have no symptoms.
If you have been invited for a third dose and the time or date is not suitable, you can rearrange your appointment.
Previous doses
If you have not had either your first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, you should arrange to have them. You will still need the third dose but the timing of it will depend on any treatment you may be having.

The booster dose and 3rd dose are exactly the same jab!!!
Not according to the Administration here and the mass vaccination centre. One gives you another of the first two and the booster helps to extend protection from the main injections we’ve had, including the third primary.
Ask your GP. My surgery initially told me there was no such thing. I think the experts on vaccination should know best. So perhaps you could query it with your GP.
Hi Bowenlady,
It's all very confusing as the text is pretty ambiguous. Essentially, the protocol for the general population is two doses and then a booster. The protocol for the highly vulnerable category is three vaccinations and a booster (probably in six months). The vaccine and the booster are the same dosage (though not with Moderna which is a half dose I think), they are just calling it something different.
When they call a booster a top up, it's just a turn of phrase, the dosages are exactly the same with Pfizer.
But most of us oldies had AstraZeneca. The advice I have read says that there are three primary of the same strength for those with compromised immunity followed by the booster which is meant to prolong the efficacy of the primaries. Really there should be definitive instruction for us all as we all have different ideas of what it is. I have been told by the mass vaccination centre that there is a difference between the primary and booster, as I’ve mentioned. That’s all I can say. At the end of the day, I don’t really care so long as I have all 4 when they are due. Lol! X
